Polar stratospheric clouds, aka glítsky, are even cooler than rainbows because they are MUCH more rare. They’re even rarer than the aurora! Glítsky only occur in highly specific conditions. Their altitude must be between 15,000-25,000m, and the sun must be between 1-6 degrees below the horizon. The temperature at the cloud level must be ~-78 degrees C. This occurs only in a span of 1-2 months in the Arctic winter. Basically, the cloud is frozen just enough, and the angle of the sunlight is just right for the light to fractal through the cloud and create a rainbow effect. Seeing glítsky is always a humbling, awe-inspiring moment, and I’m extremely grateful to have now seen them twice here in Iceland! January/February are my personal favorite months in Iceland. The storms have calmed a bit and the sky is always doing something magical. The brief daylight only means that for the 5ish hours the sun is out, it’s sunset colors the whole time. The sky is often pink and orange all day here this time of year, and it’s never boring. There’s a high chance of aurora many nights, and you might even get some glítsky! Geoengineering is where people try to manipulate the environment to lead to some sort of environmental benefit. This startup is trying to mimick the natural process that occurs in the aftermath of large volcanic eruptions by releasing sulfur into the atmosphere and plans to continue to release more to “cool the climate”. However, there is still so much uncertainty around the impacts of such work on the atmosphere and the environment. Despite this uncertainty, the startup decided without regard to anyone or permission from anyone to release this sulfur. This disregard of others seems to be a similar mindset of many companies… 🙃
