The reason we got Maisie ⬇️ Since I was a little girl, I dreamed of having an Australian Shepherd. She has always been my dream dog and I wanted a pup I would be completely obsessed with. Australian Shepherds are incredibly intelligent, loyal, and known for being amazing with livestock. One day we would love to have a family farm, and I wanted a dog who could grow into that role with us. She’s not just our pet she’s part of the life we’re building. Many people choose a breed based on temperament, drive, and purpose. That was our reason. I also believe ethical breeding matters deeply. I do wish there were more consistent standards across the board, especially when it comes to properly screening parent dogs and ensuring strong placement practices. My opinion on the most to least understood herding breeds, after many years of raising them: 5. Swiss Shepherds – Generally understood as sensitive, handler-oriented dogs, but their need for structure and environmental stability is still often underestimated. Stands as most understood on this list but arguably still not well-understood.  4. Aussie mixes – People expect "easy & versatile" but at least recognise there’s working-dog complexity under the surface - even if it is typically an after thought once their chosen for their pretty color.  3. Australian Koolies – Increasingly recognised as serious working dogs, but often their striking coloring and well-tempered nature makes people forget these dogs work cattle all day in the Australian outback. 2. Australian Cattle Dogs – Widely regarded as cute, goofy family dogs now thanks to Bluey, and don’t realise how demanding, full-on, and hard they are to live with without real work. 1. Border Collies – The most talked-about herding breed and paradoxically the least understood. Everyone loves the idea of them. more than just a pretty face (like, a lot more) 🧠✨️⁠ _____________________⁠ ⁠ People always compliment the dogs and ask what breed they are - but looks are the LAST thing you should consider when deciding to bring one of these dogs home 🙅🏻‍♀️ ___⁠ ⁠ Aussies require lots of exercise and mental stimulation - which is why we take them for hikes with us, daily walks, and participate in a variety of dog sports to keep them physically active and challenge their brains.⁠ ⁠ They’re also very smart and generally willing to please - but early (and proper) socialization is important to avoid anxiety/fearfulness around strangers in the future - we learned this the hard way with Apollo. ⁠ ⁠ And because they always want to be with you, teaching them how to be calm while you’re away is just as important as any other training 👏🏼⁠ ⁠ They’re an amazing breed for the dedicated owner - but you should ALWAYS do the appropriate research to ensure you're choosing the right dog for your lifestyle!⁠ ⁠_____________________⁠ ⁠ Australian Shepherd | Herding Dog | Aussies | Red Merle | Active Dogs | Dog Sports⁠
