Avalanches happen... It's not a secret and unfortunately they happen even when you think you have analysed everything. Sometimes nature is unpredictable even when you try so hard to predict everything. Gearing up with all the necessary stuff that will help you staying alive or searching for someone that is buried is a MUST for me. And I'm not gonna lie, sometimes you also need to be a bit lucky to survive... . . #ski #skiing #powder #alps #alpine #skier #freeride #avalanche #avalanches #valanga

Ever notice snow blowing straight off a ridgeline and wondered why that matters? That snow getting ripped off the top of the mountain is called wind transport, and in the backcountry it’s one of the biggest red flags to pay attention to. Wind doesn’t just move snow around. It actively builds avalanche problems. When strong winds hit a ridge, they scour snow from the windward side and deposit it onto the leeward side. That dropped snow can pile up fast, forming wind slabs that are often denser and more cohesive than the snow underneath. The tricky part is that this can happen even on days with little or no new snowfall. Old snow can be moved, reloaded, and turned into a problem all over again. Those smooth, rounded pillows you see just below ridgelines or in cross loaded gullies are classic signs of wind loading. Cornices growing bigger, snow plumes streaming off peaks, and sudden changes in snow texture under your skis are all clues that the wind is actively shaping the snowpack. Why does this matter for decision making? Because the most dangerous slope isn’t always the one facing into the wind. It’s usually the slope where the wind dropped the snow, and those locations can change depending on wind direction throughout the storm. Watching how snow is moving in real time gives you information you won’t always get from the forecast alone. Wind tells you where the snow is building, where slabs are forming, and where you should be extra cautious or choose a different line entirely. #laketahoe #wildernesseducation #california #weol #wilderness #mountains #ltcc #backcountry #windslab #avalanches

If you thought last early season was sketchy wait until it snows on this sun/rain crust across the west. I really hope you are taking the training and more importantly continuing your education. It’s gonna get extra Spicey. @skidoo #neverstoplearning #mountains #colorado #avalanches
