The national average price for a gallon of gas has climbed above $4 for the first time in nearly four years, with Philadelphia also crossing that threshold, according to AAA.

Gas prices have jumped past an average of $4 a gallon for the first time since 2022 as fuel prices continue to soar worldwide amid the Iran war. The national average reached $4.02 on Tuesday, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. That’s up more than $1 since last month. Prices in our region are close behind. The five-county Philadelphia area also averaged $4.02, up 6 cents overnight and 4 cents in the last week, though many drivers throughout the region have been seeing higher rates. Since the U.S. and Israel launched a joint war against Iran on Feb. 28, the cost of crude oil — the main ingredient in gasoline — has spiked and swung rapidly. That’s because the conflict has caused deep supply chain disruptions and cuts from major oil producers across the Middle East. The last time U.S. drivers were collectively paying this much at the pump was nearly four years ago, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
