In modern poultry farming in the US and Europe, the standard of galvanised ‘silver’ aviaries is giving way to black polymer-coated netting (12–19 mm mesh). With the same wire thickness, the black structure visually ‘disappears’ from as far as five metres away, transforming the aviary into an open panorama. The physics of absorption versus reflection Light-coloured or galvanised wire acts like a mirror: it reflects photons at different angles, creating myriad micro-glare spots. To the human eye, these glare spots merge into a continuous veil of light — visual noise that the brain interprets as an insurmountable barrier. Black pigment (especially matt) absorbs up to 95% of incident light. The absence of a return signal causes the visual cortex to ignore the mesh, focusing instead on contrasting objects behind it. The neurobiology of focus Our brain operates on the principle of resource conservation. When confronted with a grid that does not glare, the eye’s accommodation adjusts to the distant background. The foreground is ‘subtracted’: the neurons responsible for edge detection cease to signal the presence of an obstacle. This allows the owner to carry out a visual check of the bird (assessing plumage, activity, and crest colour) without entering the flock or intruding on its personal space. The psychology and biology of comfort For hens, the absence of a bright ‘grid’ is a factor in reducing cortisol levels. Sharp glare on metal is often perceived by birds as the movement of a predator or unnatural flashes, which triggers micro-stress. A black mesh creates a stable, soft visual environment. Less stress means more stable egg production and a stronger immune system. Verdict: The symbiosis of transparency The black mesh is a rare example of technology where changing a single parameter (colour) yields multiple benefits for both parties without altering the design. For humans: It offers the aesthetics of an ‘open space’ and the possibility of contactless monitoring. You see not a cage, but an ecosystem. For birds: It provides psychological security and protection against corrosion (the polymer lasts 2–3 times longer than galvanisation).

Clean environments are essential for healthy birds. 🦜 Our aviaries are maintained through a combination of daily light cleaning and regular full cleanings. During daily routines, soiled areas are removed and fresh substrate is provided where needed. In addition, complete cleanings are carried out, where the entire aviary is cleared, thoroughly washed, scrubbed and reset. This helps reduce pathogen load, supports hygiene and ensures stable conditions for the birds. Within 24 hours, standing water can turn into a bacterial soup — even if it looks crystal clear. E. coli, yeast, harmful germs — invisible, but deadly. In nature, birds drink from moving, changing water. In aviaries, water stands still — contaminated by food, dust, feathers, droppings. And it’s not only how often you change the water. It’s also which water you give. Most tap water is not as clean as we think: old pipes, chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria. If you’re unsure — use bottled water. I’ve seen entire breeding stations wiped out. Years of breeding success — gone. One breeder once told me he lost countless baby chicks and breeding pairs because of contaminated water. Slowly. Silently. Without warning. Many don’t know this. They lose chicks during hand-rearing and never understand why. Water looks harmless. But dirty water is one of the biggest silent killers in aviaries. A very special and unexpected arrival here at Blue Valley Aviaries. We are thrilled to introduce a Half-Sider Normal × Grey-Green Par Blue (Grey) — something very rare that caught our attention immediately 💙. A “half-sider” is the result of tetragametic chimerism, a phenomenon that occurs when two genetically distinct embryos fuse very early in development. The bird then develops with two separate genetic cell lines, often expressed visually as a striking bilateral split in colour. An extraordinary reminder of why we love aviculture — and a privilege to witness something so rare and unlikely to be seen again in our own aviary.

Ring-necked parakeet 🦜 Most ornithologists, and bolstered by the work of researchers at UCL, believe these non-native birds have bred from small incidents of escapees from aviaries. But some of the other popular theories, though weirdly specific and romantic (and I couldn’t find any factual basis for any of these) are: - They were refugees from the film set of The African Queen, shot in Ealing in 1951. - A pair were released by Jimi Hendrix on Carnaby Street (central London), in the 1960s. - The Great Storm of 1987 damaged aviaries, resulting in escaped captive birds. - A plane crash into the aviary of Syon Park in the 1970s. Though their true origin is hard to place, these introduced birds stand out against our flora, and can be heard by their loud calls. 90 birds have recovered and been released after receiving treatment at the rescue centres in Mithri and Kachroda #Rajasthan Emergency shelters, intensive care, artificial ponds, and aviaries are being provided to ensure the well-being of these birds. Critically ill ones are receiving infrared therapy, oxygen support, and temperature regulation to help stabilise their condition. Members of the Rajasthan Forest Department, Animal Husbandry, State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), District Administration, and local panchayat are working tirelessly on the ground to provide relief and conduct rescue operations. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) – Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) Emergency Relief Network (ERN) team from @hope_and_beyond and @rakshajaipur, is leading the rescue efforts. #InServiceOfNature #BackToTheWild
