What is AWS IAM? AWS IAM (Identity and Access Management) is a service that helps you securely control access to AWS resources. It answers three important questions: - Who can access AWS (users, applications, services) - What actions they can perform (read, write, delete) - Which resources they can access (S3, EC2, RDS, etc.) IAM works using: - Users: Individual identities with credentials - Groups: Collection of users with similar permissions - Roles: Temporary access for services or external users - Policies: JSON-based rules that define permissions Real Example: A backend service running on EC2 needs to upload files to S3. Instead of storing access keys in code, you attach an IAM Role to EC2. That role allows only "PutObject" permission on a specific S3 bucket. This way, the application gets secure and limited access without exposing credentials. Best Practice: Always follow the principle of least privilege — give only the permissions required, nothing more. Understanding IAM is fundamental to building secure and scalable applications on AWS. #AWS #CloudComputing #DevOps #SoftwareEngineer
