We have been using all of these methods with our small flock of backyard chickens for 2-3 years and although no methods are 100% perfect, we have been so pleased with the overall experiences. Keep in mind if you have more then 20ish chickens in your flock, these practices may not work as well for you. It takes hours, weeks and months to test what works best for your animals and your schedule. This is just what works for us and we will continue using these methods for many years to come! I noticed something interesting watching the chickens in the garden. Before they dig for bugs, they always loosen the top layer of soil. It aerates the soil, mixes nutrients into the surface, and exposes insects. Now before I transplant seedlings, I lightly loosen the top layer first. It gives the roots a much better start.
