This is Vezos, my pet ball python I rescued out of a co-worker’s car engine on a cold day in Florida; she was trying to stay warm after an irresponsible pet owner dumped her into the wild. This is not an invasive Burmese python, but rather a non-native ball python, which may be kept legally as a pet (unlike Burmese pythons). Ball pythons look similar to Burmese pythons, but are much smaller and incredibly gentle. They have distinctive alien head patterns on their bodies. Vezos is about maximum length of 5+ feet and weighs 5+ pounds. She visually appears to be a normal or wild ball python, but there are so many morphs now, it’s often difficult to know if they are het for anything else. So, I had her shed tested. The genetic results show that Vezos is het for albino and enchi. Het? That is short for heterozygous, genes (alleles) that may not be visually apparent. Most of you know what albino is and it’s very clear she’s not visually albino, a recessive color mutation. Compared to normal ball pythons, enchi ball pythons have less defined alien head patterns on their bodies and more orange/gold color, with the pigmentation becoming brighter with age.
