Hardly anyone ever does bent over barbell rows properly. That is, with them staying in that bent over position. Now there are many other row variations that are a lot easier to execute but if you are going to do bent over barbell rows, you have to focus on keeping those erectors engaged and staying in the bent over position so you avoid turning the movement into a pseudo shrug

When performing a barbell back row, nearly all the muscles in your back are engaged. However, grip width plays a key role in targeting specific areas. A shoulder-width grip places more emphasis on the lower portion of the back, including the lats. A medium-width grip shifts the focus to the mid-back, working the upper lats, middle traps, and rhomboids. A wide grip emphasizes the upper back, hitting the middle to upper traps and rear delts. The barbell row is one of the most effective back exercises. Here are 2 mistakes I see: ❌ Standing too upright ❌ Pulling the bar straight up towards your sternum and elbows flaring. Instead, try: ✅ Hinging forward so your torso is at least 45*. You can hinge even further if range of motion allows but make sure you stop at your end range of motion BEFORE your back begins to round! ✅ Pulling the barbell towards your belly button instead of the sternum. This will use your back muscles more effectively and less upper traps. I love barbell rows because there are many different variations. By changing the grip from underhand to overhand or wider to more narrow, you can change which muscles you’re focusing on. Additional cues to remember when performing a barbell row. ✅ Push hips back and keep knees slightly bent. ✅ Keep core engaged and maintain neutral spine. ✅ Pull shoulders blades back, don’t let the shoulders round forward. If the bar moves away from you, you lose leverage. 4️⃣ Spine Position Keep a neutral spine — no rounding, no excessive arching. 5️⃣ Torso Angle Hinge forward so your torso is about 30–45° from horizontal. As you row, don’t stand up — that shifts tension to the upper traps and turns it into a shrug. 6️⃣ Elbow Path Don’t flare your elbows out to 90°. Instead, keep them around 45° from your body to better target the mid-back (rhomboids & lats). A super-wide row still works — but you’ll often lose balance and leverage. 7️⃣ Bar Path Don’t pull the bar straight up toward your chest. Instead, row in a slight arc toward your belly button or upper abs.

3 Barbell Row Grip Widths: Shift the Focus 🎯 💡When it comes to barbell rows, all grip widths train your upper back. Let’s bust the myth right here: you can’t isolate a single area of your back with grip changes—but you can shift the focus. 👊 Close Grip: A narrow grip involves a greater range of motion and places slightly more emphasis on your lats and the mid-back, including rhomboids and traps. 🛤 Medium Grip: A 1.5x shoulder-width grip balances the load across your upper back, working traps, rhomboids, and even some rear delts. It’s the sweet spot for most lifters. 📐 Wide Grip: Widening the grip reduces range of motion but shifts focus higher, emphasizing your upper traps and rear delts. 💡 Science-backed takeaway: The back works as a unit. While grip changes tweak the focus, all variations contribute to an overall stronger and more muscular upper back.🔑 Which grip do you use the most? Let us know below!👇
