This is a volcanic rock called basalt, but it’s not just any basalt - this is a sample of the Harrat Basalts from volcanic fields in Saudi Arabia and contains bits of another kind of rock called peridotite from Earths mantle. Basalts in this location are very old compared to the basalts I work on, and weathering and exposure to the elements can change or alter their mineral composition, leading these basalts to contain a mineral called iddingsite- the brown mineral in the plane polarized light slide. The first clip with less color is the rock seen under Plane Polarized Light - this means only one light polarizer is being used & light vibrates on only one plane so only certain minerals will show colors. The more colorful clips are under Cross- polarized light - this uses two polarizers and makes it so that light can only pass through if a mineral interferes. This interference changes the color appearance of the light/ mineral. Each kind of light shows us different properties of the mineral. Not only does this let us figure out the mineral is in a rock but can show us what processes the rock has been through- has it been subjected to intense heat and pressure from a major geologic event? Have some of the crystals been re-melted along the edges by an igneous intrusion? Have they been broke from high amounts of strain? These are all things we can see using microscopy. #geology #Science #womeninstem #rocks #crystals

At last! I have seen many specimens over the years, but this one really made me sit up, a stunning mesolite from the Deccan basalts of the Jalgaon District, Maharashtra, India. This zeolite mineral can have many forms like elongated crystals, tufts and porcelain like masses, but look at this one – a stunning radiating spray of acicular (needle like) crystals, a full completely front-facing hemisphere simply attached to matrix - wonderful. At first it looks like a huge cotton ball, but closer inspection shows the buff-white-blue elongated needles, so evenly formed all round. These are very brittle, and great care is needed not to touch, imagine collecting it? The rocks in which these zeolites occur tell an amazing story. Eighty million years ago rifting occurred on the ancient continent of Gondwanaland between what was to become the Africa and India continental plates. This produced volcanism from a plume of magma, and over a 5-million-year period huge quantities of ‘flood’ basalts flowed over the surface extending over 1.5 million km. As volcanism ceased and the India plate moved NE to ultimately collide with the Eurasian plate forming the Himalayas, about two thirds of this enormous pile was eroded – todays Deccan plateau basalts (still huge) being only a part of what once was. The minerals in the gas pockets were found to be from post volcanic hydrothermal solutions from the lava itself and rainwater, and on cooling differentiated into the many different minerals we see today. The compositions of the basalt itself determine the chemical nature of the solutions themselves and the mineralogical diversity, which is dominated by zeolite and associated minerals. A cataclysmic event, ultimately forming specimens so delicate and breathtaking, I always feel specimens like this invite us to seek their story and like all exquisite minerals – the sense of awe and wonder they give, leads to the why. Thanks, Nathan Reiskin, for trusting me with this one 😅 #minerals #crystals #zeolite #india #fineminerals #education #geoscience #amazing #mineralshow #geology #amazingnature #rockhound #sphere #naturesart #awesome

Cavansite — a rare calcium vanadium silicate, found in zeolite-rich basalts. Discovered in just a few locations globally: India (Pune, Maharashtra), USA (Oregon), and New Zealand. Its striking blue hue and limited occurrence make it one of nature’s rarest mineral masterpieces.💙💙⚒️ #CrystalHunter #reels #geologyrocks #mineralscience #rockhunting #trending #naturelovers #instagram #rockcollection #cavansite #rare

The closest modern analogue we have to flood basalts is the catastrophic eruption of the Laki fissure in Iceland from 1783-1784. #spookyscience #geology #volcano #science #volcanology

Epidote Epidote crystals are usually a pistachio green or yellowish-green color, but can also be brown, grey, or nearly black. This specimen displays all of these colors throughout the stone. Display great clarity and excellent termination. This is a special piece because it is DT or double terminated and a floater with no damage whatsoever. Excellent vitreous luster combined with truly great esthetics. Epidote is a common mineral formed during hydrothermal activity and low grades of metamorphism. It is often found in metamorphosed basalts and gabbros, as well as in schists and marbles. Epidote is found in many places worldwide. This piece was found in the Zard Mountains, Kharan, Balochistan, Pakistan. Fun Fact : Epidote's name comes from the Greek word epidosis, which means "increase". The Devil’s Postpile National Monument had been on the *Adventure List* forever. We finally got to explore this geological wonder, where lava met glaciers to form these incredible columnar basalts. “The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its' columns tower up to 60 feet and display a striking symmetry.”~National Park Service. We spent some time admiring the fallen columns and then made our way to the top of the postpiles to see how they perfectly fit together. This National Monument is located in the Mammoth Mountain, CA area. During summer months they have a shuttle bus that takes you to the trail head. It costs $15.00 (adults), $8.00 (child). It’s a pet friendly hike but you need to have a muzzle for your dog for the bus ride. (They sell them for $10.00 where you purchase your tickets.) *SECRET TIP*: You can drive to the trailhead *if* you get there before 7:00 a.m., which is what we did on this Saturday morning in June. We beat the crowds and had this trail almost entirely to ourselves (no waiting in line for photo ops.😜) We met some new friends that told us you can also drive down after 7:00 a.m. if you have paddle boards/kayaks with you. Parking is limited though so the earlier the better. The road in is a single lane (for a while) on a winding mountain road so drive with caution as you have to squeeze by the busses. This hike also leads to Rainbow Falls so be sure to plan on doing it all. The hike to the National Monument is .05 miles and an additional 2.0 miles to the falls (one way.) We definitely recommend adding this to your list of *must see* sites! . . . #devilspostpile #devilspostpilenationalmonument #mammothlakes #adventurecouple #traveltipsandtricks #travelinspiration #travelislife🌏 #vanlifeadventures #hikewithus #findyouradventure #hikewithdogs #nationalmonument #travelingthroughtheworld #hittheroad #earthfocus #fantastic_earth #naturegeography #wonderfulplaces #earthpix #awesomeearthpix #wildernessculture #awesomeglobe #earth_shotz #earthofficial #bucketlistadventures #themoountainsarecalling
