What is cryptic basking? Ras is here to show you! I've started switching some of my boas to halogen bulbs rather than heat projectors to give them more UV heat rather than ambient only. Ambient is essential but UV aids in muscle and bone development so why not do both? Cryptic basking is where they put part of their body in direct line with the UV/heat while hiding the rest of their body. It's kind of like wearing a hat in the sun. You're getting the amount of vitamin d that benefits you while preventing you from overwhelming your system. Not all of my enclosures are set up the same. Some have heat projectors, some have heat panels, some have halogen. This is for a few reasons, 1. I started with the projectors so it's a process getting everyone switched bc it's not cheap! 2. Some of my enclosures are dramatically cooler than others based on where they are in my reptile room, the lower the level, the more consistent the heat source needs to be (55-65° is too damn cold not to have additional heat!) Heating/lighting is one of the most debated conversations happening in reptile keeping right now. It's complicated, it's dense and across the board, it's expensive. If heating teaches us anything, it's that you can learn something new every day (if you're not a stuck in the mud). "Wise men hold strong opinions loosely."
