Remember Evie!? With her cute ears? Watch her go! #wildandfree #greyheadedflyingfox #rescue #bats #threatenedspecies

Stop! 🤚 Make way for Malayan Flying Fox, Mitzvah, and her sniff inspection this Saturday. Do you think you passed? 🦇🤔 Because this species of bat does not need to (and cannot) use echolocation to find their food, they rely on their other senses to find fruit in the wild. Having a great sense of smell can definitely help locate fruit to snack on! 🦇👃 #animals #bats #cute #florida #nonprofit

Evening bats are so cute and yappy, I love them! Here’s 2 current patients that were found needing help by @xjulzillax (one of the volunteers on our team training on bats, yay!) - thank you so much for helping them! They will be released after they gain some weight and and the weather warms up 🦇 #rescuerehabrelease #wildliferescue #batrescue #bats #eveningbats

Emmerson and Leaf enjoying some gentle sunshine with Megan 🦇☀️ These two little ones arrived well outside the usual birthing season for the Grey-headed flying fox and are now safe in care with Emma at Bungalook Creek Wildlife Shelter. They are wild animals in rehabilitation, not pets and will be released back to the wild when they’re ready. All carers are rabies (ABLV) vaccinated and specially trained to handle flying foxes. #flyingfox #greyheadedflyingfox #bats #batsofaustralia #baby

If you think bats are scary… listen to this one complain 😭 That little squeaking? That’s not echolocation, that’s pure batitude 🤣 She’s letting us know, very clearly, that she has opinions about being handled… and honestly, fair. Most people never get to hear this side of them. They’re not scary, they’re just tiny, dramatic and full of personality. And yes, she was absolutely fine… just offended. #bats #batsofinstagram #wildliferehab #wildliferehabber

The Honduran white bat (Ectophylla alba) is a small, striking species found in the lowland rainforests of Central America, particularly in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Unlike most bats, which have dark fur to blend into caves or night skies, this species has bright white fur and a vivid yellow nose and ears. Weighing only about 5–6 grams, the Honduran white bat is one of the smallest fruit-eating bats in the region. Its unusual coloring helps it blend in with light filtering through tropical leaves, offering camouflage rather than making it more visible to predators. One of the most fascinating behaviors of the Honduran white bat is its tent-making habit. Small groups usually made up of a few females and a single male chew along the veins of large leaves, causing them to fold into a tent-like shelter. These leafy tents protect them from rain and predators during the day while they rest. At night, they leave their shelters to feed primarily on figs. Because they rely heavily on specific rainforest plants for both food and shelter, habitat destruction poses a significant threat to their survival. Wow! What a #WingWednesday bath time from Malayan Flying Fox, Elmira! 🦇😛 Animal Care/Merchandise Coordinator, Rikki, captured this neat moment where we can see Elmira's patagium very well. The patagium is the skin on a bat's wing! While many people assume the patagium is thick and leathery, it is actually a thin layer of skin (like our eyelid). When the sun shines on it, we can see some of the muscles and veins that run through the wing. 🦇☀️ #animals #bats #cute #florida #nonprofit

The hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) is the most widespread bat in the Americas, ranging from the frosted forests of Canada down to Argentina, and even reaching the isolated islands of Hawaii. Easily identified by its “hoary” appearance a coat of long, mahogany-brown fur tipped with silver this solitary, tree-roosting species prefers the hidden canopy of foliage over the dark depths of caves. Unlike many social bat species, they are long-distance migrants that travel hundreds of miles to warmer climates during the winter. They are relatively large and powerful flyers, primarily hunting large moths and other nocturnal insects in open spaces above the treeline. The vocalizations of the hoary bat are distinct because they often cross into the range of human hearing, appearing as a series of sharp, metallic “ticks” or high-pitched chatters. These social calls and low-frequency echolocation pulses typically sweeping between 20 and 30 kHz are remarkably piercing, leading many to compare the sound to the rhythmic chirping of a smoke detector or a low-battery alarm. Beyond these audible alerts, the bats are masters of acoustic stealth; they can transition into ultrasonic “micro-calls” or even fly in total silence to ambush eared moths that have evolved to detect bat sonar. When threatened or defending their foraging space, these “smoke detector” chirps can escalate into harsh, shrill hisses that are unmistakable to anyone nearby. This little guy is a bit itchy! This little baby evening bat came in a few days ago with over 50 mites crawling all over his body. We gently picked off all of those icky mites, but he was still a little itchy after. We got him on camera itching with his back foot 🥹 #rescuerehabrelease #wildliferescue #batrescue #bats #babybat
