Beaver teeth grow their entire lives — up to six feet total! Gnawing on wood is an effective way to sharpen incisors, wear down tooth enamel and prevent a dental hazard. Even when beavers aren’t building dams, they’ll chew on trees. Beavers also eat part of the tree. Right under the bark is a thin layer of sugary cells called cambium, the actual growing part of a tree. After that, most of the wood is dead. In this video via @photo_beaver, a beaver gnaws on a tree trunk and spits out wood shavings. He’s already past the tasty cambium. And if you’re wondering, beaver scat can look like a lump of sawdust or shredded wheat due to all that fiber. But they usually do their business in water.
