Kinda want to throw the whole house away. 🤮😭😭 This bed bug ordeal has been a HUGE learning experience for me, and our whole family really. We still don’t know for sure where or when this started, but it doesn’t matter. Anyone can get them, and from anywhere. Now that I’ve dealt with this mess at home, I know how to look for them when we are traveling - plus ways to be extra cautious when we come back home. And when thrifting too! I learned you can bring home critters from thrifting, but there are ways to be safe about it too. Have you dealt with bed bugs before? Did you know that bed bug bites usually present in clusters of 3 to 5 bites that appear in a zigzag pattern? Bed Bugs accumualte in and around beds and bedding. They feed on human blood, typically at night. Their bites result in itchy raised bumps. They may appear red on lighter skin or slimply flesh colored on darker skin. A traveler’s worst nightmare: BEDBUGS.⁣ Here’s what to do if it happens 👇🏼⁣ ⁣ You wake up covered in bites - three in a row, little lines - and the thought hits you: no way… bedbugs.⁣ It’s gross and uncomfortable, but don’t panic. You can totally handle this! Here’s the game plan:⁣ ⁣ 1. Heat is your best friend.⁣ ⁣ Take ALL your stuff to a laundry place and ask them to run everything in the dryer on max heat, for the longest cycle.⁣ Heat kills bedbugs + their eggs. Water alone doesn’t. So make sure it’s not only washed but also heat dried!! ⁣ ⁣ ❗️And yes - by “all your stuff” we mean literally everything soft: clothes, backpack, packing cubes, shoes, hats. Anything fabric = potential hiding spot.⁣ ⁣ 2. Check the non-washables.⁣ ⁣ Flip through notebooks, camera gear cases, anything you haven’t used in a while. Make sure no bedbug is hitchhiking.⁣ ⁣ 3. Switch accommodations ASAP.⁣ ⁣ Tell your hostel/hotel what happened and move somewhere new.⁣ ⁣ 4. Don’t freak out if you see new bites.⁣ ⁣ Bedbug bites don’t always show up instantly - they can take days or even up to two weeks to appear.⁣ So if you’ve heat-treated your stuff and moved to a new place, new bites don’t always mean new bugs. Keep an eye out for actual signs instead.⁣ ⁣ 5. Know what to look for.⁣ ⁣ Bedbugs love the dark. Hands OFF the bites.⁣ ⁣ We know it’s itchy. Don’t scratch - you don’t want to make an infection out of it. Here are the main things to know: - They can come from anywhere and anyone can get them. - They tend to bite in a group or a line, but not everyone gets red spots. I never did, only my kids. They can be very itchy but my kids never itched. - They come out at night and hide in the daytime. Look everywhere around, in, under, and near your bed. - Professional pest control heat treatment is the BEST way to get rid of them. It’s what we did. Kills the bugs and the eggs. It’s expensive - about $1 per square foot of the home. - High heat dryer also kills them. They will die tied up in a black bag sitting out in the hot sun or in a hot car. Anything over 120 degrees for a couple hours kills them. - Food grade diatomaceous earth will kill them, but not as quickly. - You can vacuum daily and dispose of the lint/dust immediately (outside, double bagged). You can wash sheets daily, spray with rubbing alcohol daily, steam your baseboards. This may be effective to some degree but it isn’t a good method.
