The day John and Yoko recorded Give Peace a Chance from a hotel bed 🕊️ May 1969, Room 1742 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. John Lennon and Yoko Ono had been doing their famous Bed-In for days, inviting the press in to talk about peace while the Vietnam War raged on. Then John picked up an acoustic guitar and decided right then and there to record a song. There was no studio. No fancy setup. Just a rented four-track recorder, a room absolutely packed with reporters, friends, activists, and random people who had wandered in. John had scribbled the lyrics on a notepad. Yoko was right there beside him. And everyone in that room became part of it, singing, chanting, caught on camera looking like they had no idea this moment would last forever. Because they probably didn't. Five months later, half a million people marching on Washington were singing that same song in the streets. For eight days, starting May 26, they stayed in bed, turning media attention into a platform for their anti-war message—and it worked. The recording feels more like a gathering than a session. Among the voices in the room were Tommy Smothers, Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, and Petula Clark, with Smothers also playing guitar. Reporters, hotel staff, and visitors added percussion by banging on doors and tabletops, blurring the line between protest and performance. Credited to The Plastic Ono Band, this became Lennon’s first hit outside The Beatles. Unsatisfied with the initial take, John brought in Hare Krishna drummers for the next pass, later remixing the drums after coming in early on the third verse. I’m not saying their relationship was totally healthy, or that their wasn’t weirdness there. John and Yoko were on the same wavelength but the narrative tends to be that John is beloved and Yoko is reviled. While reading up on @yokoono for her birthday post, we remembered this extraordinary moment captured of the late, great @johnlennon and Yoko recording their anti-war anthem “Give Peace a Chance”, during a “bed-in” in Montreal in 1969 as the Vietnam War raged. ✌️ It was released as a single by Apple Records by the Plastic Ono Band, the first solo single issued by Lennon while he was still a member of @thebeatles . The recording session was attended by dozens of journalists and a local group of Hare Krishnas, as well as celebrities like Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg. Lennon and Tommy Smothers played acoustic guitars. 🎶 When initially released in 1969, the song was credited to Lennon-McCartney, a decision Lennon later regretted, saying he should have given credit to Yoko Ono, who had actually been the co-writer. There’s something very sad watching the video - video link in the comments - and seeing Lennon at the height of his hippiedom and idealism. Boy has the world changed in the past half-century, and not necessarily for the better! It all seems so wonderfully innocent and naive. The war machine was already in full operation. 🌹

John Lennon met Yoko Ono on November 7, 1966, at the Indica Gallery in London. Yoko was there finishing the setup for her avant garde art show, and John dropped in mostly out of curiosity. What really caught his attention was her piece called “YES.” It was a ladder you had to climb, and at the top you looked through a magnifying glass to read a tiny word on the ceiling: yes. He loved that it was something simple and positive. There was also an interactive piece where people could hammer a nail into a wooden board. John asked if he could do it. Yoko first said no because the exhibition had not officially opened yet, but the gallery owner encouraged her to let him. John joked that he would hammer an imaginary nail with imaginary money, and the whole moment turned playful.
