A side car cot can be an incredible sleep environment that allows parent and baby to have separate sleeping surfaces yet still be physically close and easily accessible to each other. So let's set up a side car cot together: 1️⃣ Take one side off the cot. If you don't have a cot where one side comes off, you can get creative, just ensure whatever you do, the cot still stays stable! 2️⃣ Place the cot as close as possible to the bed 3️⃣ Secure the cot to the bed 4️⃣ Ensure the mattresses are the same height. For this I used furniture lifters (aka planks of wood) under the legs of the adult bed, but you could also saw some length off the height of the cot legs if needed, or use furniture lifters under the cot legs. Once again, whatever you do, make sure it's STABLE. 5️⃣ Pack the gaps with firmly rolled up towels, some people suggest using pool noodles but they have more of a tendency to move and come free, so a tightly rolled up towel is a great option to prevent the baby getting stuck in gaps. 6️⃣ All done ✔️ We don't want any blankets or pillows in the cot, and the bed needs to be set up in a way so that it's safe for bedsharing in case the baby moves into your sleeping space. Come set up a sidecar cot with us! First up, you won’t find these on any safe sleep platforms but there are lots of reasons why a side cart cot might suit your family, I know its been a GAME CHANGER FOR OURS 🙌🏻 You can’t buy these in Australia, but some simple hacks to your existing cot can do the trick! So here are the key points 🌼Take the side off and make sure your mattresses are ABSOLUTELY LEVEL. We had to trim about 30ml off the cot legs to do this however we ideally want the mattress on the lowest setting so you may actually need to use some risers 🌼Make sure you mattress can’t move anywhere, we don’t want any gaps between the mattresses at all. Our bedframe doesn’t actually have an ‘edge’ so we drilled in some shelf brackets to hold it in place. 🌼Next, you need to attach the cot frame to your bed frame, we used heavy duty zip ties for this to ensure the frame fits as tightly as possible. 🌼Check your mattress and pack any gaps. We have the @growbright airinest and it’s HEAVEN (more to come in this!!) and fits so well so we didn’t need to worry, but most mattresses will leave some space.
