Hive stands mimic nature by raising hives off the ground, keeping predators like skunks and raccoons at bay. So while they’re not obligatory, we definitely recommend using them to protect your bees. You can create your own or grab a ready-made stand through the link in our bio! 📷: @dirty.hoe.farm #nature #outdoors #beekeeping #beekeeper #honeybee

A beekeeper’s first clue is often at the bottom of the hive. 🐝 After winter, the bottom boards tell a story. Dog Company had a large winter cluster and a strong population going into the cold months. The result? A lot more bees naturally dying off inside the hive over the winter. Easy Company had a smaller cluster, so there’s noticeably less debris and fewer dead bees. These clues help beekeepers understand what happened inside the hive without even opening it. Beekeeping is part science… but it’s also a little bit of detective work. — Flannelly Farms . . . . . . . . #savethebees #honeybees #beekeeper #beekeepers #backyardbeekeeping

I am so glad I did an intro course, job shadowing, a year-long commercial beekeeping course, and multiple work seasons as a full time beekeeper before getting my own hives. This path isn’t realistic for everyone who wants to keep bees, and I know that. What I do strongly recommend is taking beginner beekeeping workshops, reading books written for your area (Beekeeping in Western Canada) and books on disease identification and integrated pest management. (The yellow book written by Dr. Mark Goodwin in NZ). Getting bees is a commitment and it comes with a steep learning curve. Join your local bee club to learn from others and to have a community to troubleshoot issues with. Take courses. One of the biggest mindset shifts in early-season beekeeping: Food before queen. During spring buildup, colonies rapidly increase brood production while forage is still limited. This creates a critical nutritional gap where food demand rises faster than nectar availability. When resources are low, colonies reduce brood, weaken, or collapse — regardless of queen quality. Healthy spring colonies show: • remaining honey stores • incoming or stored pollen • brood supported by nutrition Strong queens depend on strong nutrition. 👉 Comment “HONEYBEE” for our beginner beekeeping guide 👉 Follow for grounded, practical hive education #beekeeping #beekeepers #backyardbeekeeping #backyardbeekeeper
