Beep baseball is a sport for athletes with vision disabilities that dates back to the 1970’s. All players wear blindfolds to even the playing field as some are fully blind, and others are partially blind. It is a game that depends on sound. The ball beeps, and the bases buzz. If a batter can reach the base before the opposing team grabs the ball, they score it as a run. I got to witness the Long Island Bombers defeat Boston Strong in an exhibition game in Central Park as a part of the National Beep Ball Association which has teams all over the country. The Long Island Bombers are dedicated to educating the community about blindness. Through the game of beep baseball, they provide athletes that are blind or with a vision disability the opportunity to play the game and offer a support network to its members. It is the Bomber’s goal to expand educational clinics, speaking engagements and demonstrations throughout the entire region. You can learn more at LIbombers.org @li_bombers_bb

Sunday is the day we highlight Beep Baseball players from around the league. This week we stay on the defensive side of the ball. Today’s highlight features Cody Jeffares of the Indy Thunder. In the 2025 Beep Baseball World Series Championship Game, Cody tracks down a high pop up and makes the clutch putout to secure the out for the Thunder. A big defensive play on Beep Baseball’s biggest stage. To help more blind and visually impaired people experience the game, check out the link in our bio for donations to our organization. #sundayfunday #beepbaseball #defense #highlights #fyp

Beep baseball is baseball reimagined for athletes who are blind or visually impaired. It’s been around since the ‘70s and runs entirely on sound — the ball beeps, the bases buzz, and everyone wears blindfolds to keep things fair. If the batter reaches the base before the fielders grab the ball, it’s a run. I got to see the New York Bombers face off against Boston Strong in Central Park, part of the National Beep Baseball Association — a league with teams all over the country. But the Bombers are about more than just the game. They’re out here educating people about blindness and building a real sense of community through sport. Beep baseball gives athletes a space to compete, connect, and just have fun. The team also puts on clinics, demos, and talks to spread the word and get more people involved. I play an adapted version of baseball for the blind called Beep Baseball, where the ball emits a beeping sound, and the bases that you run to also beep. I am part of the #BostonStrong beep baseball team, and we played at Fenway Park against the Boston Renegades. It was very funny that I got hit in the face! I'm so glad that I at least made contact with the ball.

Meet the West Coast Echo, California's first all-female Beep Baseball team. The sport uses a beeping ball and base to help visually impaired players. Since the level of impairment varies among players, each athlete has to wear a dark mask. The batter swings toward the sound of the ball and runs toward the sound of the base, hoping to get there before the opposing team's outfielders, also unsighted, can get to the ball. If they succeed, the player is "out." If they fail, the player scores a point. Some of the participants at this week's practice were trying the sport for the first time. "It helps them get out of their comfort zone,” said coach Isabela Varela. "And, that’s the scariest part – to run blindly and go out in the outfield." Kellie Walders, a Braille instructor from Los Angeles whose constant companion is her seeing-eye dog, Nugget, tried Beep Baseball for the first time. “I was a little apprehensive, at first. I didn’t think I was running properly," she said. "But I had fun." Tap #linkinbio for full story.
