After several failed attempts to requeen them using eggs from another colony, I honestly thought they were done. But they surprised me. Against the odds, they successfully raised their own queen. That’s why I named them Phoenix. I had lost hope—but they rebuilt, slowly and steadily. 🐝 Thinking of Becoming a Beekeeper? Consider This… (Part 4) 🐝 Before you go buying hives, bees, suits and all the equipment… it’s worth asking yourself one simple question: Have you actually stood in front of a hive full of bees? And I mean a proper colony — potentially 60–80,000 bees, all busy, all flying, all doing their thing. Beekeeping looks wonderful (and it is), but it’s very different when you’re actually there in the moment — opening the hive, hearing that hum, and realising you’re responsible for everything happening inside. I was fortunate when I started that a couple of local beekeepers let me come and spend an afternoon with them. That experience alone taught me more than weeks of reading ever could. There are plenty of opportunities across the country to do the same — beekeeping experience days, taster sessions, and association open days. A quick search online will usually bring up something near you. My advice? Try it first. Stand beside the hive. Feel the atmosphere. Then decide if it’s something you truly want to commit to.
