The idea for the movie came from the backgrounds of both Richard Linklater and Kim Krizan. Linklater spent a night walking around Philadelphia with Amy, a woman he randomly met. Krizan rode around Europe on trains meeting people and on one trip met a Norwegian man on the way to Paris, and ended up walking around the city all night much like Before Sunrise (1995). Krizan has never revealed whether or not they had a romance that night and they lost contact. Linklater and Amy stayed in touch for a while, until contact was lost and he never heard from her again. It was not until 2010 that Linklater found out that Amy had died in a traffic accident before the release of Before Sunrise (1995), the first film in the trilogy. The Before trilogy is considered the pinnacle of romantic realism, but its origin was not born of pure fiction. It was Richard Linklater’s attempt to crystallize a memory that, unbeknownst to him, had already become a ghost. It all began in Philadelphia. Linklater was visiting his sister when he met Amy Lehrhaupt in a toy shop. Their dynamic was identical to the film: hours spent walking and talking about science, art, and life until morning. In the movie, the two promise to meet again after six months; in reality, Linklater and Amy tried to stay in touch by phone for a while, but distance and time caused the connection to fade. Linklater later confessed that the creation of Before Sunrise (1995) was an act of extreme hope. Not knowing what had happened to Amy, he made the film hoping that she, upon seeing the trailer or the poster, would recognize the story and show up at the premiere. This mirrors the plot of the second movie, Before Sunset, where Jesse writes a book for the exact same reason. However, the truth was far more tragic. It wasn’t until 2010, three years before the release of Before Midnight, that Linklater received a letter from an old friend of Amy’s. The news was devastating: Amy had died in a motorcycle accident on May 9, 1994. When Linklater captured the first shot of Before Sunrise in Vienna, the woman who had inspired it had been gone for only a few weeks.
