👇🏻3 Drills to Level Up Your Turns ⛷️ Important: the outside ski is in charge — you need pressure on the outside ski. 🎿 1. To build pressure on the outside ski, it helps to lower your body position slightly. This gives you more range of motion and reduces leverage from the forces acting on you. 2. Move your upper body over the outside ski to shift most of the pressure onto it. 3. Once you feel stable over the outside ski, you can lift the less-loaded inside ski to further improve your balance and position. No run is too green or too flat to have fun and work on your skiing! These are some of my musings while skiing the same run over and over on opening day. With a (pretty extensive) ski racing background, I love thinking about technique and I love the dreamy feeling of carving a good turn. In my mind, a solid turn starts in the feet but is really dependent on your whole body, and skiing really flat runs can be super helpful for building the connection between your skis, boots, feet, ankles, knees, hips, and shoulders. 1. Really think about and feel what your feet are doing in your boot and how that impacts what your skis are doing on the snow. As you roll from turn to turn, feel the weight shifting from the outside of the foot to the inside with the goal of really engaging and heavily weighting the ball of the foot and the big toe by the time you get to the apex of the turn, primarily on the downhill ski 2. Roll the ankles from turn to turn in to get onto the new edge, and think about how rolling the ankle impacts what your feet are doing in to boot and what your knees do to follow 3. After you’ve initiated the turn with your feet and ankles, flex into the front of the boot to engage the ski early in the turn. Drive the knees forward and use them to deepen the edge angle. If your weight is mostly on the downhill ski, you’ll have an easier time getting both knees to drive into the turn (rather than A-frame) 4. Stack your hip over your knee, ankle and foot over top of the toe piece of your binding. You should feel your weight and power all connected down to the ground in a continuous line. You’ll feel this line break if you move your hips backwards or twist your hips side to side. 5. Keep shoulders level with the horizon and keep the zipper of your jacket facing down the hill. Your shoulders shouldn’t be tipping in or twisting to either side - both of these actions will break that strong powerful connection from your body to your feet from #4. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if your hands are dropping as long as your shoulders stay level and square, but if not it can be helpful to act like you’re carrying a tray of drinks #skiing #skier #skitechnique
