The acclaimed American writer who visited the festival last summer shares some of his approaches to writing and sums up his experiences in teaching young poets (Ocean Vuong was one of them). Lerner sees teaching as a way of creating new value, which is not about economic value, but a value that “needs to be developed to stay human”, he says. Ocean Vuong’s journey into writing began after meeting an exceptional teacher. After working odd jobs and drifting through community college, he enrolled at Brooklyn College, where he met the poet Ben Lerner, who became a pivotal mentor. Vuong, who had grown up in a Vietnamese immigrant family with little literary background, found in Lerner’s class the validation and guidance he needed to turn his fragmented thoughts into art. It was there that he realized writing could be both survival and revelation - a way to translate silence and trauma into beauty. Lerner encouraged him to pursue poetry seriously, setting him on the path that would lead to Night Sky with Exit Wounds and On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. Vuong often credits that moment - sitting in a Brooklyn classroom - as the beginning of everything.
