Did you know that blueberries need acidic soil (below pH 5.5) to thrive and grow best? Without the right soil pH, blueberries aren’t able to extract the nutrients (eg iron) it requires from the soil, resulting in poor vigour or yellow leaves. This is why I grow all my blueberries in pots, so I can better control soil pH. Blueberry soil tips: 🫐 Use an acidic potting mix specially formulated for acidic loving plants. This is often called azalea, rose and/or gardenia potting mix, though with the amount of people wanting to grow blueberries these days.. should prob be rebranded to blueberry potting mix!! 🫐 Use a pH soil test kit to measure your soil before planting 🫐 If your soil is too alkaline, add sulphur to decrease the pH & acidify the soil 🫐 Consider growing newer hybrid varieties, eg Sunshine Blue, which are more tolerant of slightly less acidic pH (but not alkaline!) These Organic Raspberries were grown the old-fashioned way— • No store-bought shortcuts. • No fancy gadgets. • Just Dirt, Sun, + a little Mountain Grit💪🏼 1. Pick a Sunny Spot. Granny always said: “If it don’t get sun, it don’t get sweet.” (It is as simple as that). 2. Start with Strong Roots. Back then, folks traded canes over fence posts. Heirloom over hybrid, always. If ya know anyone growing Raspberries ask them if ya can buy some plants. If not hit you local, family owned nursery. 3. Prune ‘em every year—HARD. The old-timers weren’t gentle with dead wood. Neither am I. Cut ALL THE DEAD SHOOTS down to the ground, at the end of the summer. *** Ya'll will think they look awful afterwards. Trust the process. This step is crucial. 4. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch! Straw, pine needles, old feed bags. These plant loves acidic soil. We like to get buckets of decomposing Hemlocks or Pine and put that at the base of our berries. Just like Granny. 5. Fence ‘em in and stake them up. Raspberries wander like gossip. Grandma ran twine and stakes. So do I. I like to train them into rows so they are easy to pick and train. 6. Fertilize them... organically. Granny always said to use your old coffee grinds. We still do this bi weekly. Raspberries love acidity. Using coffee grinds is a great way to organically fertilize your raspberries. This spring we erected a t-frame trellis to contain the 25 feet of raspberries we planted in the spring of 2022. They should be flopping over that top wire, but last winter a bunny ate them entirely to the ground, which for summer bearing raspberries will set them back a bit. By next year they'll be making full use of that top wire. This trellis keeps the canes off the ground, which theoretically reduces critter snacking and pest infestation, and also keeps air flowing through the canes to reduce fungal issues. I also use it to remind myself which canes need to be cut out and which ones to leave when I'm pruning in late winter. With summerbearing raspberries, this year's primocanes (new growth) will be the ones to grow berries the following year. They need to be left through the winter. Last year's floricanes (that already produced berries) can be cut back entirely.
