I first painted this two years ago the weekend I found out I had breast cancer. I’ve always hated it and when I tried to fix it, I got frustrated (thus the scribbles). The nice thing about this mounted @uartsandedpaper is that I can rinse and repeat. It’s been a long time and I’ve missing this feeling. I knew I would miss having hair when we shaved it in August of 2024 but I tried to be practical and unbothered when I stared back at a bald stranger in the mirror. The weight of losing so much of my femininity all at once has been heavy. Not only my hair - body parts, my hormones, gaining weight due to steroids and medicines. It’s been humbling and brutal to be in a body that doesn’t look or feel like what I’ve known for 50 years. But the other day I realized the wind was blowing my hair around. I never thought it would mean so much. The other day someone said they missed seeing my face on my feed. First of all, that’s so nice. 🥰Second of all, it’s been hard to feel like sharing personal pics when I haven’t liked what is in the mirror. (Please, this isn’t a post begging for compliments). In that first image of this reel, I was so swollen and so sick. My skin had split open from the chemotherapy, and I had so much full body inflammation. I 100% *do not recommend*….(unless of course you need it). 🌷 I’ve had such terrible body image and self esteem issues since (and really, for a long time before) and I have been working so hard to do things to feel better about myself. I feel like there are two types of people - those who get over things and move on, and those who don’t. I want to be in the first group while solidly sitting in the second. But I’m working on it - and through it!! 👏🏻 Thank you to @beardedlady_hairco for always making me feel pretty and for the giggles and grins. ❤️ Also to @reformamarillo for helping me tackle my injured skin - helping to that glow back and repair so much damage. 🦋 I always love hearing from you - so many wise and kind people here. Pardon the self indulgence and vanity. I’m living on borrowed time with something that has always been with me and has always made me feel pretty. My hair! Really, I think I’ll be okay when it goes (any day now) but I can’t help but think how much it has been a part of my identity. I’ll reflect and look back and say thank you to my long hair! I’ve always loved fixing it and letting it be wild or coifed. I’ve heard the texture will change when (🙏🏻🙏🏻) it grows back. Maybe even a different color?! As a theatre ingenue, I’ve had it so many ways. I’ll take this situation as gracefully as I can and think of it as a new character. She’s brave!! I miss people I’ve never met and many of them are you! Painted this small piece today after a wonderful weekend away with my beloved at the family farm. We live on the high plains prairie and the clouds are always stunning with the dark land below. Soft Pastel is a perfect medium for skyscapes. The beginning paint brush swipes are a softening technique I like to use on this specific paper by @sennelier1887 (and usually only with cloud and sky paintings) I’m excited to use their new paper that supposedly handles wet under paintings!
