Bhakti and Yoga are not two different paths; they are two movements of the same inner journey. Yoga disciplines the body, breath, and mind. Bhakti softens the heart and dissolves the ego. Yoga creates steadiness; bhakti gives direction. Without bhakti, yoga can become mechanical. Without yoga, bhakti can become emotional imbalance. When yoga is practiced as an offering, effort turns into devotion. When bhakti matures, discipline turns effortless. Yoga helps us observe and transcend the ego. Bhakti melts the ego through love and surrender. As awareness deepens through yoga, devotion arises naturally. Stillness gives birth to reverence. Silence becomes prayer. True yoga leads to bhakti. True bhakti is lived yoga. Union happens when effort meets surrender.

In class last week, we talked about the yoga of divine love. The Sanskrit word for this is prema, and it is central to the practice of Bhakti Yoga- a path of liberation through love and deep devotion. “Bhatki” derives from root word “bhaj”, meaning “to serve”. Inherent even in the word is the idea of love as an embodiment practice, love as a verb. Not just an emotion, but a way of showing up in the world. Universal brotherhood and service to others are fundamental parts of the Bhakti philosophy. This practice of love in action comprises virtues such as non-harming, truthfulness, compassion, and humility. Human love can often be grasping and self-serving, but divine love is selfless and giving. Bhakti is pure, unselfish love where the “other” is revered as an expression of the divine. The Bhakti sutras clearly state that among those who walk this path there is no distinction based on caste, creed, culture, beauty, learning, family, wealth or profession. Divine love is inclusive, unconditional, and unlimited, and the deepest love is a force for liberation. Bhakti Yoga intersects with social justice by fostering a compassionate, action-oriented commitment to equity. The Bhakti movement emerged during a time of rigid caste hierarchy (and the widespread discrimination and oppression that came with it). In response to injustices and political turmoil, 8th century bhaktas used their voices to speak against caste hierarchy. They practiced love, devotion, equality, and humanism, while opposing discrimination and the supposed superiority of the priest class. They emphasized a direct emotional connection with the divine through love and devotion, and they asserted that the divine lives within everyone. This tradition historically has served as a spiritual foundation for anti-oppression work, and this is obviously relevant to the context of today’s world.
