Breakfast On Sunday @jarvisbransoncocker played this during his set @serpentineuk to commemorate Burns night. It was also shortly after the anniversary of the tragic death of singer Billy MacKenzie, one of the greatest and most original voices in British music. This track sounded incredible on Laurence Passera's almighty system, I'd heard it many times being an Associates fan, but suddenly it was as breathtaking as when I first heard it in 1985. January 22, 1997. Billy MacKenzie (The Associates) died alongside an apologetic suicide note, in a garden shed at his father’s cottage in Auchterhouse, Scotland, after an overdose of amitriptyline, beta‐blockers and paracetamol. He was 39. “Party Fears Two” was written by Billy Mackenzie and Alan Rankine and included on their second studio album Sulk (1982). The song was originally written in 1979, around a piano riff, but both musicians initially rejected it as too tuneful.
