Two Spirit is a sacred and culturally specific identity within many Indigenous nations across Turtle Island. It reflects the unique roles, gifts, and responsibilities held by some Indigenous people who embody both masculine and feminine spirits—or who simply walk in ways that are outside colonial gender binaries. But let’s be clear: Two Spirit is not the same as non-binary. It’s not a trendy label, and it’s not interchangeable. Two Spirit comes with deep cultural, spiritual, and community-rooted meanings. That said, some Two Spirit folks may also identify as non-binary, and that’s valid. Just like some may identify as queer, gay, trans, or none of the above. So while there may be overlap, Two Spirit isn’t a subset of non-binary identity—it’s its own powerful, Indigenous experience that predates colonization and thrives in our resurgence today. 🪶 Respectfully, non-indigenous people are not Two Spirit people (I gently invite you to research your own heritage and culture and find words within it that resonate with you). It’s not fair to appropriate and mis-use an indigenous identity that has been under constant attack and is vulnerable, please find your own. Know the difference. Respect the roots. My drag draws inspiration from India's centuries-old Beherupiya tradition—where artists masterfully transform across genders, ages, and social roles as storytellers and social commentators. Just as Beherupiya performers have moved fluidly between identities for generations, challenging social perceptions through their art, today's gender anarchy continues this sacred tradition of transformation. When I step into drag, I'm not just performing—I'm participating in an ancient practice that has always understood gender as something more expansive than binary categories. The Beherupiya's ability to shift between presentations reminds us that our essence transcends the limitations of gender. Their art teaches us that identity is both a personal journey and a communal celebration. Through these transformations, whether on village streets centuries ago or digital platforms today, we create spaces where people are seen first as individuals—complex, nuanced, and worthy of recognition beyond gendered expectations.
