GMO: an acronym for genetically modified organisms. It describes modern day hybrids created using genetic engineering techniques instead of other methods like mutagenesis or selective breeding. But technically, EVERYTHING you eat is a GMO. You wouldn’t have corn, strawberries, bananas, broccoli, if it weren’t for humans interfering & messing with the genetics of plants. Today, we use precise techniques instead of randomly breeding or mutating seeds and hoping something good happens. GM technology is WILDLY misunderstood, & it’s used to spread misinformation and fear about science & technologies that can improve our lives & our planet. Let’s set the record straight: GMOs do NOT change our DNA. Or cause cancer. Or autoimmunity. Or inflammation. Or any other health issues attributed to them. Or damage the environment. GMOs are safe, extensively researched (more so than non-GMO items) and are as nutritious (if not more so) as non-GMO options. GM crops confer a benefit: to the crop, the planet, the farmers, or the consumers. GE crops are ecologically beneficial & require less pesticide inputs than both organic & conventional non-GMO options (yes, organic foods use pesticides). Added genes can reduce rotting, add nutrients, impart natural pest resistance, reduce the need for soil tilling, & reduce carbon dioxide emissions. In the US, there are 14 FDA-approved GM food products. (None of them are wheat, by the way). Most are used for animal feed, oils, or textiles. GMOs aren’t a thing to avoid, and we need to continue to combat fear of science that is based on misunderstanding or false claims.
