The bird dog is a complete core workout as it challenges both anti-rotation and anti-extension control. And my favorite part… no equipment necessary👍 The most common flaw I see in people’s technique is not finding their neutral pelvis position before starting the movement. The whole point of this exercise is to teach your trunk muscles the coordination necessary to control your pelvis and spine so just be sure you are finding that neutral position before moving g your extremities. Here are the 4 levels of progression: Level 1: Arms only - 6 x 10sec hold Level 2: Legs only - 6 x 10sec hold Level 3: Full bird dog - work up to 1-min hold Level 4: Bird dog repetitions - 3 x 10-20reps Which exercise do you want me to explain next ?? #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapist #nashvillephysicaltherapist #nashvillephysicaltherapy #fitness #fit #fitnessmotivation #fitnesslifestyle #birddog #birddogexercise #coreexercises #coreexercise

The difference ⬇️ With both Bird Dog variations, you’re training your body to stabilize the shoulder, spine and pelvis while movement of your limbs create instability and rotational forces. It’s all about building balanced core strength and coordination that you can carry over into things like heavy lifts or skills for sport/work. The difference is quite simple Standard Bird Dog (“advanced”) is harder because you have less stability. The Single Limb Bird Dog (“beginner”) is easier because you have more stability. This is great for when it’s too hard to stabilize or too painful to perform the double limb version. There are a ton of variations here but I like to keep it as simple as possible when prescribing corrective exercises. Either variation is also a great way to prime the body to brace up nicely before heavy lifts. #coretraining #correctiveexercise #lowbackpain

Improving spinal stability is of UTMOST important to avoid injury during training as well🤝🏼 Take them SLOW & controlled. Focus on the stabilization of your trunk (no rocking hips or arched back!) through the entire movement. #birddogs #birddogexercise #lowerbackpain #lowerbackpainrelief #lowerbackexercises #coreexercises #corestabilitytraining

Here's a clip of Dr. Evan walking through how to use bird dogs to train core strength AND to master moving your arms and legs without moving your low back! You might be asking, how do I monitor my own back and know if it's moving?🤔 Sometimes, a cue as simple as a broomstick can help to monitor your form! Take the top of your broomstick off, and place the stick portion on your low back. A neutral position for the low back should have a little curve in it for the stick to sit in. If your low back starts to round, curve excessively, or rotate, the broomstick will match that movement and tell you your back is moving! It can be helpful to just think about making sure the stick doesn't move. Our recommendation is to try the bird dog just moving your arms first. Then try moving just your legs before you combine the two. At what point are you unable to consistently control movement of the stick? That's where you should start! You'll notice that this cue forces you to slow down and be intentional with your movement! That is key! This exercise is all about control. Focus more on keeping your back still rather than lifting your arm and leg as high as possible.
