Falling feathers Bird feathers are not only a distinctive feature, but also a remarkable creation of nature. They serve many purposes: protecting the body from cold and moisture, enabling flight, producing sound, and even acting as a means of communication. The structure of a feather is both complex and delicate — a central shaft with fine barbs that interlock like a natural fabric. Feathers come in countless shapes, colors, and textures, often reflecting the bird’s environment, habits, and even emotions. More than just a physical trait, feathers are symbols of freedom, transformation, and the deep connection between earth and sky. #feather #faethers #animuspax #cute #positive #beauty #planets #dreamcore #liminalspaces #nature #liminal #viral #liminalspace #vibe #backrooms #nostalgia #comfort #windows #toryou #circles #edit #teamwork #radiohead #landscape #windows

Have you ever wondered what those tiny crown feathers looked like when they first appear! I think it’s like magic when the sheathing is ready to crumble away, you can just rub your fingernail across it to free the new blue feather! I think nature is so interesting!🦚💭🌱

It’s pin feathers time! There’s something very satisfying about pin feathers on a parrot, and I love helping Shelby out with her feathers when she needs it. #shelbythemacaw

🦚peacock Gabriel loving his crown feather’s being preened! Have you ever felt a crown feather before? They feel soft yet have a stiff texture to them! They remind me of little paint brushes!!🌱💙

Preening our rooster Sven, and fun feather facts. 🪶🐓 When birds grow new feathers (called pin feathers), they come out covered in a protective, thick, waxy casing. This is because new feathers actually have a blood supply running through the main shaft! The casing protects them while the blood supply is there. As the feather matures, the blood supply recedes and then the sheath dries out and begins to break down. If a blood feather breaks before the supply recedes, it bleeds profusely. Birds will preen off any of the feather sheaths they can reach when they are ready. This opens up the new feathers which protect them from the elements. A body full of quills wouldn’t be too warm. Some spots are impossible to reach though: Especially the ones around the neck, and in Sven’s case, his little “ear muffs”. The sheaths will split a bit when ready to come off, and then I get to work. As somebody who enjoys picking at things… preening off casings is a treat. Sven loves the pampering, so it has become a little ritual of ours. Wearing nitrile gloves helps because it provides a bit more friction against the sheath, and easily breaks them down. It also prevents the casings from getting all stuck under my nails. Sven now has puffy warm “ear muffs”, and we are still working away at all of his hackle / neck feathers. Did you know that feathers have blood vessels running through the clear shaft as they grow? Do you think you would enjoy preening? It is so relaxing and satisfying for us pickers.

Pin feathers are a normal part of owning birds and it’s important to understand them as living feathers in development. Each feather begins life wrapped in a keratin sheath that protects a delicate blood supply while the feather grows. When a pin feather is still dark, shiny, or hard, it’s not ready to be touched. If broken at this stage, it can be extremely painful and can bleed heavily if the feather is large (like a wing or tail feather). If a blood feather breaks: Stay calm. Apply firm pressure with clean gauze. Cornstarch can help slow bleeding and is a first aid must-have. If bleeding doesn’t stop within a few minutes, seek an avian vet immediately. A large broken pin feather is unlikely to stop bleeding without intervention, as the body continues to supply blood to the feather to support growth so if your bird doesn’t allow you to stop the bleeding you’ll need to visit a vet who may apply stitches. Save this post so you know how to support your parrot’s feather health going forward. Once the feather matures, the blood supply dries up and the sheath becomes pale, flaky, and crumbly, that’s when gentle preening or a warm misted bath can help your bird remove it themselves. Birds enjoy preening in groups or with flock friends, it’s a huge part of socialising and developing bonds within the community. You can help your bird if they don’t have a friend with pin feathers they can’t reach, like the head and neck. Your bird should be able to do the rest themselves. (I’m helping Shelby here for educational purposes only). Once the sheath is completely removed that feather will remain in the body for up to a year before naturally falling out, ready to be replaced by a brand new feather, and the cycle begins again! Pin feathers aren’t a problem. They’re a sign of healthy growth, good nutrition, and a body doing what it’s meant to do. . #theaviaryparrotfood #nutritionwithamission #macaw #pinfeathers #parrotfeathers

How I make feather?

Waxwings! I was so fascinated by these tiny red tips when I had the opportunity to work on this bird recently that it took me down a total rabbit hole. Why did they feel so waxy - like the seal on a letter - and was there a sassy flashy function? There are so many things I can talk about with these birds, but our attention span probably wouldn’t make way for it. Please note that these are just little titbits; there is so much more to learn so if I’ve left anything off, I’m totally aware that one could write a book on just one bird and all of its functionality and physiology! Hope you enjoy learning about this. 📚 - N.B. This is not true for all waxwings/all adults or juveniles. There is variation and can be dependant on sex, age or genus. Please forgive the spelling errors on the captions: they’re auto generated so sometimes misquote the speech.
