On January 26, a team of researchers in the Canary Islands saw something no one on Earth has documented before—a black seadevil anglerfish slowly weaving its way to the ocean’s surface. Known for their gaping jaws and bioluminescent lures, these fish typically reside between 650 and 6,500 feet deep, making this a remarkable event. Head to the link in bio to learn more about the black seadevil anglerfish—and why scientists think it came so close to the surface. Video by David Jara, Marine Wildlife Photographer (@jara.natura)

A deep-sea anglerfish, a type known as the Black seadevil recently made a rare appearance in light-filled blue waters off the coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Marine animal photographer David Jara Boguñá and Spanish NGO Condrik Tenerife said in their joint post that the “legendary fish” is a humpback anglerfish, which “to date, records have mostly consisted of larvae, dead adults, or specimens spotted by submarines during deep-sea scientific expeditions.” It’s unknown why the fish was in such shallow waters, researchers said, as black seadevils typically live in the deep sea, where light no longer penetrates the water. Female anglerfish are known for the “fishing pole” like objects on their heads, the tip of which lights up the darkness of the deep sea to attract prey. #anglerfish #deepsea #deepseacreatures #ocean #marinelife #oceananimals #blackseadevil #canaryislands

#pecesabisales #anglerfish #abisal #Melanocetus #islascanarias #natgeowildlife #earthcapture #tenerife #nationalgeographicespaña #faunamarina #buscandoanemo #findingnemo #faunaespañola #eltempstv3 #divetogether #Divessi #TuFotoNatGeo #inthemoment

A once-in-a-lifetime discovery! 😯 This incredible footage of a live adult black seadevil (Melanocetus johnsoni) was captured just 2 km off the coast of Tenerife. This legendary predator, typically found at depths of 200–2000 meters, was detected swimming at the surface in broad daylight—something rarely seen by human eyes. A true marvel of the ocean, the black seadevil uses bioluminescent bait to lure its prey, much like in Finding Nemo—but seeing it in real life? Absolutely jaw-dropping! 😮 This remarkable sighting reminds us how much there is to explore beneath the waves! 💙 🎥 @jara.natura @condrik_tenerife #Anglerfish #PADI #UnderwaterExploration #MarineLife #BlackSeadevil #OceanDiscovery #ScubaDiving #OceanConservation

In November 2014, MBARI recorded what we believe was the first ever video footage of the black seadevil alive and at depth.  Deep-sea anglerfishes are elusive animals that are rarely observed in their natural habitat. This little angler, about 9 centimeters (3.5 inches) long, is named Melanocetus johnsonii. MBARI’s ROV Doc Ricketts observed this anglerfish at 600 meters (1,969 feet) in the deep dark waters of the Monterey Canyon.  Anglerfishes have evolved a remarkable way to catch prey—a fishing pole with a luminous lure at the tip. Instead of expending energy to chase food, a hungry anglerfish merely sets out its bioluminescent bait and waits. The glowing tip entices small fishes and crustaceans to come closer, then the anglerfish’s massive mouth and sharp teeth snap shut for a meal. 🌊🐟 Surpreendente! A rare black seadevil anglerfish, usually found between 650 and 6,500 feet deep, was spotted swimming near the surface off the Canary Islands. The sighting, possibly the first of its kind, was made by Spanish NGO Condrik Tenerife and marine life photographer David Jara Boguna. The female fish, known for its bioluminescent lure and sharp teeth, was likely sick or escaping a predator. Despite being observed for hours, it died shortly after being filmed. Experts consider this a significant discovery, as most previous records involved larvae, dead specimens, or deep-sea submarine sightings. #BlackSeadevil #Anglerfish #DeepSeaFish #MarineLife #RareDiscovery #OceanMysteries #WildlifePhotography #DeepSeaCreatures #Bioluminescence #SeaExploration

Fonte: G1
