This is a life-threatening rash. It's known as a non-blanching rash. A non-blanching, rapidly evolving rash is a marker of very severe disease + requires urgent care. 🚑⁠ ⁠ Rashes can have many different appearances - raised bumps, be bright red, have flat areas, blisters, welts or a combo of all of these. They might spread, move and change over time. You can also have rashes that appear small and have bright red/purple spots or bruises - this is the type of rash you can see in the video above.⁠ ⁠ When you notice your bub has a rash, you need to perform a test to check if the rash blanches. Blanching means that when you apply pressure, it turns white and then comes back to the standard colour.⁠ ⁠ Do this by applying pressure with your finger to the rash, hold for 5 seconds + release. What did you notice? Did it turn white and then back to red? If yes - good! This is a blanching rash + as long as bub has no other concerning symptoms, follow up with your GP. ⁠ ⁠ Another way to see if the rash blanches is by doing the 'glass test' as shown above. Roll a glass over the rash and watch to see if it changes colour.⁠ ⁠ If you press, hold and release and the rash doesn't change colour to white - this is a non-blanching rash + you need to seek urgent review by a doctor. Blanching Veg before freezing ensures a better colour, taste and texture when cooking from frozen. Napa Cabbage Rolls is one of those recipes that feels indulgent but eats light. It’s protein-forward, veggie-packed, and surprisingly comforting. Start by blanching Napa cabbage leaves in hot water just until soft. Remove, pat them completely dry, and keep aside. If you can’t find Napa cabbage, regular round cabbage works just as well. For the chicken filling: In a bowl, add minced chicken, finely chopped ginger and garlic, chopped carrots, onions, spring onions, light soy sauce, oyster sauce, a few drops of sesame oil, white pepper, and a little cornstarch for binding. Mix well and adjust salt carefully, depending on how salty your soy sauce is. Place the filling onto the cabbage leaves, roll them up gently, and keep them seam-side down. Heat a pan, lightly sear the rolls until they get a bit of colour. Pour in some hot water, cover, and let them steam for a few minutes until cooked through. For the sauce: Mix light soy sauce, vinegar, a little water, sesame oil, and a pinch of sugar. Pour it over the rolls, finish with chili oil and sesame seeds. This is a tool you should use next time your child has a rash 🙌 If the rash blanches aka the changes colour when pressed = this is a reassuring sign, keep an eye out for any other worrying signs or symptoms If the rash is non-blanching aka colour does not change when pressed = could be a sign of a more serious illness such as meningococcal, it would be a good idea to see a doctor urgently to get the rash reviewed. Remember, most children with a non-blanching rash who are well will NOT have a serious underlying cause, however, because it could be a sign of a seriously unwell child, it is a good idea to get your child checked. If you're not sure if the rash is blanching, film in slow motion like I did in this video and review or use a glass and roll it over the top! 💡We would love to share more examples of this on different skin tones.
