The Moon is so close, we can taste it!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ New footage from @FireflyAerospace shows their lunar lander’s view from approximately 60 miles (100 km) above the Moon. Blue Ghost will land at Mare Crisium, on the near side of the Moon, on March 2, no earlier than 3:34 a.m. EST (0834 UTC). ⁣⁣ ⁣ All 10 NASA instruments on this flight are currently healthy and ready to operate on the lunar surface. Earthrise.⁣ ⁣ @FireflyAerospace’s Blue Ghost lander recently completed its third and final lunar orbit maneuver. The spacecraft performed a 16-second thruster burn and entered a near-circular low lunar orbit. This phenomenon is called bioluminescence, and the bioluminescent organs in fireflies are found on the underside of the abdomen; creating a chemical reaction within the firefly’s light organ that produces the light. ‘The Anamalai Tiger Reserve is home to some of the largest populations of fireflies in the world. ✨ As darkness falls, a few fireflies start flashing and soon entire trees flash in unison. In pitch black conditions, the synchronous flashes are carried across several trees in the forest. Fireflies flash to communicate, especially to find a mate. It's hypothesised that some species of fireflies synchronise their flashes to attract females of the same species from a distance. With insects and frogs orchestrating, owls calling incessantly and groups of thousands of fireflies synchronising their flashes, the jungle came alive. This forest floor in Tennessee is mating habitat for the largest colony in the Western Hemisphere. These fireflies blink in sync and then pause for 7-8 seconds. The benefit of syncing is not exactly clear, but they sync only when lots of other lightning bugs are nearby. Firefly populations are in decline worldwide due to pesticides, loss of habitat, and light pollution. The light signals stop in the presence of bright artificial light. @insidenatgeo
