Keewaydin Island is where Naples wealth goes to be anonymous. Keewaydin runs seven miles down the Naples coastline, from the south side of Gordon Pass to the northern edge of Marco Island. There is no bridge. There is no road. There is no hotel, no marina, no permanent structure on the entire stretch of sand. The only way onto the island is a boat or a seaplane, and the only way off is the way you came. That access requirement is the entire point. Keewaydin sits inside the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, one of the largest protected mangrove estuaries in North America. The land belongs to the State of Florida. You cannot buy it. You cannot build on it. You cannot stay overnight without a permit. The island has been used by wildlife for longer than Naples has existed as a city. This is what makes Keewaydin the most honest social scene on the Gulf Coast. On a Saturday, a forty foot center console out of Port Royal will anchor next to a Pathfinder out of Aqualane Shores, next to a sportfish out of Park Shore, next to a bay boat out of Bonita Bay, next to a skiff out of Old Naples. Within an hour everyone is in the same waist deep water drinking out of the same coolers. The boat got you here. After that, the sandbar does not care. This is also where Naples seaplane culture quietly operates. Float planes out of Naples Air Center and Marco Island Executive set down in the lee of the island and taxi up to the sandbar like any other day boat. It is one of the few places on the Gulf Coast where arriving by air is a logistics choice, not a statement. The ecology is the actual flex. Loggerhead and green sea turtles nest along the Gulf-facing beach every summer. Bottlenose dolphins shadow the back bay channels. Sand dollars, conchs, and lightning whelks wash up clean on the southern tip toward Cape Romano. Manatees move through the mangrove cuts between the island and the mainland. The 10,000 Islands run unbroken from the southern end of Keewaydin into the Everglades. The luxury here is the access.
