I won’t list everything, but yesterday and today I was learning book layout software to create an interactive coloring book for a client. And I did it! :) When your brain is processing too much new information, it starts to tense up, resist, and might even go on strike. The book design for Julie Wolfe's "Apophenia" uses thoughtful layout and typography to enrich its content. By placing images side by side, the design encourages apophenia: the discovery of patterns and meaning in randomness. The collaged images, ranging from dreamy visuals to unknown species, invite new perspectives. “I was particularly interested in the way it was designed and crafted,” says artist and designer Sarah Boris (@sarahboris_ldn, Creative Director at Sarah Boris Studio), who was on the Book Design jury for the D&AD Awards 2024. “But there was also beautiful production, which meant that the work leapt off the page.” Boris explains how the design agency Rational Beauty (@jeanette_birdy) and production companies @panandthedream and @kopaprinting used fluorescent ink to create a dreamy effect — and picked up a Wood Pencil in Book Design for their work. If you have any trouble with the pocket feel free to message me, I will try my best to help 🫶🏻 Materials needed for basic flip book✂️: 💗 3 flashcards 💗 masking/washi tape 💗 patterned/coloured papers 💗 glue and cutting tools Tips: ⭐️ To prevent flashcards from moving when taping them together, tape flashcards to the table first with small bits of masking tape. ⭐️ To get your masking tape perfectly down the middle of both flashcards, measure the width of the tape and mark half the width on each flashcard with a pencil. This will help guide your tape to ensure it’s straight down the middle. ⭐️ To ensure the book lays flat when opened, don’t put glue in the middle section of the spine.
