How I Annotate My Book!! [A GUIDE<3] One of the most common questions I get on this account is my annotating process. How I developed it? What I write? Supplies etc. So I decided to finally compile a little guide. Let me know if this helps 🤗 [Tabbing:] 🗂️ I like to generally use 6 diff colours to tab. If I go above six it becomes hard to keep track and makes things tedious! 🗂️ I have a “tab key” put in the beginning of the book for future reference. 🗂️ I decide on themes I tab as I go— usually designating certain concept or patterns that comes up again and again within the story. 🗂️ Examples include: motifs, character development, certain emotions, relationships, beautifully written passages etc (the list goes on! You can literally tab whatever comes up a bunch) [Underlining/Highlighting/Emphasis of Text] ✍️ I underline passages or lines of text that are essential to the ‘literary’ aspect of the book, this could be: use of a symbol, an extended metaphor, juxtaposition etc ✍️ I highlight passages or lines of text that evoke me to feel (Don’t be excessive. Highlight the parts that stand out!) ✍️ circle/square/bracket (basically emphasize) important diction, keywords, or phrases related to the theme you had tabbed that passage to! [Writing!!!] 🖍️Write down: thoughts, wonders, predictions, feelings, essential details, connections, questions, analysis!! 🖍️ Where? If it’s especially long use a sticky, otherwise, the margins, the spaces, and in between lines. Literally anywhere. 🖍️if you’re afraid to damage your book sticky notes are very helpful:) and there are clear/neutral coloured sticky notes that are quite lovely 😊 🖍️use: arrows, bullet points, numbering, icons, or whatever that may clarify your annotations. 🖍️Reminder: I only write in annotations after finishing a chapter in the parts where I’ve tabbed, this keeps my reading flowing :) [Supplies] 📂I usually use gel black pens in 0.3 (I like the thinner feel and they often don’t leak through the page) 📂I use the grey highlighters from muji religiously 📂Stickies and tabs are all from Amazon, they come in a variety of colours so have your pick:)! why I write book notes ⬇️ My reading systems consists of three parts 1. Setting a reading goal for the month, week, day 2. Actively engaging with all the books that I read 3. Writing notes on what I’ve learned from each book (key ideas, concepts, ideas, etc) That last step might seem tedious, but it has helps me tremendously with comprehension and retention 🧠 In a perfect world, I would have photographic memory, would be able to read a book once, and remember all of it’s content But unfortunately, my memory is not photographic, so doing the extra step of writing out notes for each book helps me remember what Ive read and understand the Author’s main points and ideas Do you write book notes? annotating a good book just hits different💐 my love for annotating books keep growing, even tho i haven’t done it with recent reads<3 i’m trying to focus more on annotating books that i’ve already read and loved, or if there are some books i know i will love💝 last book i annotated was heir of fire, so not that long ago really hahah, but that series has more of a systematic annotation style, so it’s not as freely annotated. i have been wanting to annotate a book with zero system and order, just do whatever feels good ahah🌷 let me know if that’s something you do, and if you think it’s a good way to annotate✨ also, espresso by sabrina carpenter has been stuck on my mind 24/7 and i’m not mad about it💘 lots of love, kris 💌

✏️Annotation 101✏️ My annotation style has evolved over the years. At first, I used the same colors for everything. For every book I read the tabs and color scheme stayed the same. I enjoy my newer way of annotation better, but I wanted to mention this because it may work best for some people! Pink- (love/happy) I use pink tabs when there is a section that I love, or a quote that I love. Blue- (sad) I use blue tabs when something sad happens or a sad quote. Green- (angry) I use green tabs on something that makes me angry. Orange-(relatable to me) I tab orange when something in the book relates to something personal. Yellow- (relates to other things) I use yellow tabs when something in the book reminds me of a real world situation, another book, or a movie. Purple- (anything I want to reference back to) Anything I may want to remember or look back at it just gets a purple tab. In magic based books (like Harry Potter) I tab spells, and things like that purple as well. Now I like to match my tabs to the cover and create a key for each read. This helped me because I used to run out of just one or two colors in the old way and have to buy more to replace. When it comes to highlighting and writing, I do what feels natural.
