☝🏻 The process known as scaling is one of the core safety measures in mining and a key factor in ensuring safe work underground. Loose or stress-loaded sections of rock at the roof are deliberately removed before they can fall uncontrollably. This is especially critical in potash mining, as salt rock continuously changes under ground pressure and layers can loosen unexpectedly. One person who knows this work inside out from hands-on experience is Tim Walter, Head of Instructors & New Miner Training at K+S’s Werra site. In this role, he trains new colleagues for this highly responsible task. Depending on the situation, they learn two different methods used at K+S: 🔹 Scaling (Peeling Method) Thin, separating layers are carefully removed in a controlled manner. This method is primarily used after blasting to safely and efficiently eliminate blast-related loosened material. It is calm, well controlled, and ideally suited to salt rock conditions. 🔹 Scaling (Striking Method) This method is used where more solid but stressed rock sections need to be released—for example, at geological faults or in areas intended to remain open long term. Experience is especially important here, as the rock reacts differently and must be addressed in a targeted way. 🎥 The video clearly shows that scaling is not a rough intervention, but precise manual work. Did you know how coal can be shaved off a mine wall and carried away in one continuous process? ⛏️⚙️ What you’re likely seeing is indeed a coal mining system. The black wall is the coal seam, and the rotating cutting unit with sharp picks scrapes and cuts the coal from the face. In longwall mining, this is typically done by a shearer that works along the coal wall, while an armored face conveyor right below carries the broken coal away.  That is what makes the setup so efficient. The cutting drum breaks the coal loose, gravity drops it onto the conveyor, and the conveyor moves it away continuously so production does not have to stop after every cut. These systems are built for very high output and are designed as part of a larger underground mining line together with roof supports and downstream transport equipment.
