I harvested the first cucumber melon today… AKA Metki… AKA Armenian cucumber. Botanically this crop is a muskmelon but it has a mild cucumber flavour (never bitter!) and delicious crunch. ⛰️What a special Fynbos Walk with @rk_ct 🌸✨ We meandered along the mountainside that opened up and unlocked through the ecological and historical stories shared with us on the walk, marvelling at our small yet mighty and most botanically diverse floral kingdom on Earth. Rupert spoke about living in rhythm with our ecosystems - from chakma baboons and fire-adapted Pelargonium cucullatum now in full bloom, to how edible plants like sour fig can become invasive when moved out of context, altering soil chemistry and local ecology. We learned that indigenous fire practices once guided seasonal migrations by stimulating new edible growth and attracting wildlife and these edible landscape routes were migratory. Even the dassies (rock hyraxes) play a role with their ancient middens preserve layers of excrement and plant fragments, offering scientists insight into centuries of vegetation change and links to elephant ancestry. We spoke about Pelargoniums exported and exploited, aloes in fynbos, Botanical untanglings of taxonomy, the effect of colonised palettes on our fynbos landscapes, rewilding the asthetic in terms of lawns and our minds when it comes to traditional gardens, invasive Port Jackson history and how amazing the iNaturalist is as a monitoring and data collection app where you can record your photos of everything from lichen to animals to tracks, feathers and animal sounds: you can upload with a locality which magically becomes a data point.
