Wow, I love this amazing quartz from Brandberg Area, Erongo Region, Namibia. The Erongo area is a pretty amazing place, dominated by granitic and pegmatitic intrusions, here being NYF type, having affinities with Niobium/Yttrium/fluorite enrichment (hence the name), but also for NYF’s here have unusually high levels of boron - so we get lots of tourmaline and world class examples of the rare aluminoborate, Jeremejevite. There is so much research into pegmatite mineralogy it’s a ‘minefield’ (pardon the pun), refining classifications and physical and chemical regimes. The NYF pegmatites are considered derived from the evolution of mantle derived magmas, while the LCT pegmatites formed during melting of metasedimentary crust. So, these pegmatites ‘sit’ in the Damara orogenic belt, a continental collision interpreted to the closing of the Khomas ocean, as the Kalahari craton (ancient crust) was driven underneath the Congo craton. The granites were emplaced much later and it was a short lived event, the Erongo granite by volume the most important about 132-133 million years ago! Although when you see pictures of the Erongo area the granites can look pretty barren and homogenous, there was late-stage crystallisation of evolved magmas forming the pegmatites, and miarolitic cavities formed providing the space to grow these rare treasures within with their unexpected mineralogies. So, we come back to this quartz, beautiful crystal, showing skeletal growth with its wrapped around ‘windows’ on the rhombohedral faces, as its grown its trapped some ferruginous material, but quick growth and then long exposure to natural radiation has given it a smokiness to its edges, and within - also lovely ‘wisps’ of amethystine colour, picked out by that vibrant purple in a total package of pure lustre, another end ‘product’ of our amazing Earth.
