The tarhu (also spelled tarhou) is a type of string instrument invented by Australian musician and craftsman Peter Biffin during the 1980s. The tarhu has a long slender neck made of Blackwood, a small round body also made of Blackwood, and four strings about the length of 80 cm. It is a flexible instrument that can be played in both plucked and bowed styles derived from both eastern and western cultures. This is a one off but other woods and options are available. This is own Soprano model in C version, 18" long, small and compact, my version inspired by Edgar Stahmer and Ronald Roberts design, with small changes internal and external for a better sound, Its a good alto instrument, the pins on the bridge help with the spacing of the strings. Today, we embark on a journey through the musical mysteries of the North, where Viking tales, ancient instruments, and a touch of magic intertwine. Are you ready? Let’s start with bowed lyres—simple yet astonishing instruments that resonated from Karelia to Canada. In Karelia, these instruments were called “jouhikko,” in Estonia “Vormsi,” and they were also played on the shores of Hudson Bay in Canada. But where did they come from? Scholars still debate. Some believe bowed instruments entered Europe through the Arabs in Spain. Others are convinced the Vikings brought them from Byzantium. And, of course, we believe in the Vikings—they could do anything! By the way, the oldest hint of such instruments in Scandinavia is a carved depiction of a musician in Trondheim Cathedral, dated to 1300. But the instruments themselves, alas, have not survived—the oldest ones that have reached us date back to the 19th century. Apparently, as soon as violins appeared, everyone abandoned their “smoked harps” and switched to new technologies. But! In Karelia and Estonia, as late as the 1930s, there were elders who remembered how to play these instruments. Their recordings on wax cylinders became the foundation for the revival of bowed lyres in the mid-20th century. What do you think of this topic?
