If your kid is in 3rd grade, try these activities to boost their math learning and gain those building block skills: 1. Play place value games. Something as simple as saying, I have 23, now I add 10 more, what do I have now? or how many tens do I have? Boost these games to the next level by using base ten blocks and a paper to cover them up to have your child guess what number is under the paper as you add and subtract tens and hundreds. 2. Skip count! Skip counting isn’t just for kindergarteners. If your child is confident skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s start counting by 3’s, 4’s, 6’s etc. 3. Let them model their multiplication. Use small objects to allow your child to model multiplication problems. For example, making 3 rows of 4 beans for 3x4. 4. Use strategy-based multiplication flashcards. When practicing quick recall, use flash cards that encourage your child to use facts they know to figure out facts they don’t. Comment “CARDS” for a link to purchase pre-made strategy cards. 5. Present division problems as guessing games. Say things like: “How many groups of 4 do you think are in 28?” Then let your child model with objects or drawings to check their guess.
