I’ve lived in South Florida for over 40 years and now call Boca Raton home. People don’t leave because it’s a bad place to live. They leave because they weren’t prepared. I see it all the time. Someone says, “I wasn’t ready for the Florida heat and humidity.” Another says, “Taxes and insurance are too high.” But then I have a family member who moved from New York to Boynton Beach and said: “We absolutely love it, being so close to Delray, the restaurants, shops, and the beach fits our lifestyle perfectly.” Same place. Completely different experiences. After 40+ years here, here’s what I’ve learned: People don’t regret Florida. They regret how and where they chose to end up. When someone leaves after 1–2 years, it’s usually one of these 👇 1️⃣ They picked the wrong city. Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, and Parkland all offer completely different lifestyles. Beach vs suburbs. Walkable vs quiet. Luxury vs family focused. I’ve personally experienced this moving from Miami to Boca Raton showed me how different two cities in South Florida can feel day to day. Where you land matters MORE than just moving here. 2️⃣ They underestimated the climate. Yes, it’s warm year round but the humidity is real. Your lifestyle shifts: early mornings, sunset walks, indoor midday plans. If you’re serious, visit in August before deciding. 3️⃣ They didn’t budget for the true cost. Property taxes and homeowners insurance here can surprise people. It’s not just the mortgage insurance, flood zones, and reassessments add up fast. 4️⃣ They moved for the house, not the lifestyle. More space and a nicer home sounds great… But if it doesn’t match your day to day life, it starts to feel off.
