Ronald Acuña Jr. had a 2023 season that didn’t just stand out—it rewrote what a leadoff hitter could be. He finished with a .337 average, 41 home runs, 106 RBIs, and 73 stolen bases, becoming the first player in MLB history to go 40–70 while also leading the league in hits, runs, and total bases.  That combination of power, speed, and consistency made him the clear National League MVP, and he was doing all of it from the top of the lineup, setting the tone literally from the first pitch of games. A huge part of that dominance was how dangerous he was in the first inning. Acuña made a habit of attacking pitchers immediately, crushing leadoff home runs and putting pressure on teams before they could settle in. There were multiple games where he opened things up instantly, showing that if you made even one mistake early, it was gone.  As the season went on, he started creeping toward historic territory in terms of leadoff homers, and it became a real storyline around the league—teams knew they couldn’t just groove him a pitch to start the game. That’s where things got tense with the Miami Marlins. Late in the season, during matchups where Acuña was chasing that leadoff home run mark, there was a noticeable shift in how they approached him. Instead of challenging him early, it often felt like they were pitching around him or being extra careful in those first at-bats, clearly aware of what was at stake. While it wasn’t officially called intentional or anything like that, the situation created frustration from fans and added a competitive edge to those games.
