Seals are not water dogs, they are actually closer to something you wouldn’t expect And if you thought they were, I can’t even blame you. Seals belong to a suborder called Caniformia, which means “dog like”. And under this suborder are animals like Dogs, wolves, foxes Bears Musteloids (weasels, otters, badgers, raccoons, skunks, red pandas) Pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, walruses) And this classification actually started a bit of a debate in the science world: whether seals were more similar to Musteloids or bears. It was anatomical evidence vs genetic evidence. Genetically they were closer to The musteloids.But through anatomical evidence, people argued that they were more similar to bears. And after these two camps being at each other’s throats for years, there was molecular evidence in 2021, that seals were more similar to musteloids.
