The only thing going through my head all day at training: “Whatchu doin’???”🤨 This is after I did a 15 minute demonstration. I typically have about 40-50 students learning at one time. I don’t always get around to everyone before they start on their second course so things can get out of hand pretty quickly. I explicitly tell them their line is not decoration, they need mortar in between all their bricks, slow down, make it look good and the courses need to be bonded correctly. Addressing some commonly asked questions or statements: Why are they so slow? For SkillsUSA contest they’re under a time limit and they are making sure that everything is perfect because they get graded down to the 1/16”. It is a precision and skill contest. Those don’t look like apprentices - that’s because they’re high school students that are just starting to learn. Why do you post sloppy work? Because it is a contest that’s fun and not everything has to be perfect. The students are learning and having fun. I post both the best and the worst because you need to see both sides of it. Each student is at a different level of training so you get different levels of quality. You can’t teach bricklaying in a class, they have to learn out on the job - while I agree most learning is done on the job site, at least they have a basic understanding of bricklaying before entering the field. It also gives them the ability to see what it’s like before they waste a contractors time on the job if they don’t like it. Hope this answers some of your questions.
