After the night of Pascha, the Orthodox Church enters into a week unlike any other: Bright Week (Η Διακαινήσιμος Εβδομάδα) It is called “bright” because everything is filled with the light of the Resurrection. The sorrow of Holy Week has passed and the Church now lives fully in the joy of Christ’s victory over death. Throughout this week, the doors of the altar remain open, symbolizing the empty tomb and the opening of Paradise to all. The services are not mournful, but radiant, filled with the repeated proclamation: Christ is Risen. In Greek, Διακαινήσιμος means “renewal” or “making new.” This week reminds us that the Resurrection is not only something that happened to Christ, but something that is meant to transform us. In Him, creation is renewed, death is defeated and life is restored. Each day of Bright Week is celebrated as a continuation of Pascha itself. There is no fasting, no kneeling, only standing in the light of the Resurrection. Χριστός ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν, θανάτῳ θάνατον πατήσας, καὶ τοῖς ἐν τοῖς μνήμασι ζωὴν χαρισάμενος. Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life. ☦️ #orthodox #orthodoxy #orthodoxfaith #orthodoxchurch #orthodoxchristian

Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ is Risen! 🤍✨ During Bright Week, the Church in its wisdom (and mercy following a strenuous 40 day fast + Holy Week) prescribes the reading of The Paschal Hours in place of many of the daily services that are a part of most people’s prayer rules. 🙏🏼 This short service takes the place of the usual Morning and Evening Prayers, the Midnight Service, the Hours, Compline, and the Prayers of Thanksgiving after Holy Communion. ☦️

Holy Water during Pascha? Yes! Today we celebrate the Feast of the Mother of God, the "Life-Giving Spring." It’s more than just a rite; it’s a reminder that the Risen Christ has healed all of creation. Just as the blind man regained his sight at that ancient spring, today we are invited to clear our spiritual vision. Does your faith feel "dry"? Drink from this inexhaustible Paschal joy. On the Friday of Bright Week, we read of Jesus cleansing the temple of the money changers. Here's what was going on. When pilgrims came to make offerings at the temple, they didn't have to bring the offering with them. Instead, they could buy offerings at the temple. This was especially handy if you were traveling a great distance to worship there. But the temple didn't use Roman money. Having the image of Caesar on them, Roman coins were believed to be unclean and not appropriate for the temple. So, pilgrims needed to exchange their Roman currency for temple currency. The money changers would lie about the exchange rate, saying that it was higher than it really was and pocketing the difference. This is what angered Christ and why he behaved in such an uncharacteristic way. Robbing from pious pilgrims was not going to happen in the temple that Jesus gave to his people. #easternorthodox #orthodoxchristian #orthodoxchurch #easternorthodoxy #ancientchristianity

Pascha isn’t a day but rather a season. The season of light. Starting with Bright Week immediately after the Feast of the Resurrection, we mark the season with joy: white vestments, no kneeling, use of the Pentacostarion, Paschal hours replacing morning and evening prayer and the triumphant greeting of “Christ is Risen!”

“When they who were with Mary came, anticipating the dawn, and found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher, they heard from the Angel: Why seek ye among the dead, as though He were mortal man, Him Who abideth in everlasting light? Behold the grave-clothes. Go quickly and proclaim to the world that the Lord is risen, and hath put death to death. For He is the Son of God, Who saveth the race of man.” May you have a blessed and BRIGHT week!! #orthodoxchristian #pascha #brightweek

✨Pascha✨ The wonder and awesomeness of our God can’t be captured in one Holy Week, one Pascha, or one lifetime. It for sure can’t be captured on camera! I pray you have a blessed Pascha and are living in the joy of this BRIGHT WEEK! ✨ #Pascha #ChristIsRisen #orthodoxmotherhood #orthodoxmom #alittleliturgicallife

Bright Monday, also known as Renewal Monday, is the day immediately following Pascha (Easter Sunday) in the Orthodox Church. It marks the beginning of Bright Week, the most joyful and radiant period of the liturgical year, where we observe no fasting rules - a gift from the Church after the Lenten journey. As @fatherspyridonbailey beautifully summarises, Bright Monday continues the Paschal joy in the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection. We are reminded that through Christ’s Resurrection, death has been defeated—not only as an event in history but as a continual reality in our lives, so that we may seek to attain the eternal Pashcal joy, just as the Saints did. Bright Monday, and all of Bright Week, is about entering fully into the life of the Resurrection. We are called not just to remember Christ’s victory, but to live as people of the Resurrection: in hope, forgiveness, and love. 🙏☦️ #Easter #Pascha #Christ #ChristIsRisen #ChristosAnesti #ΧριστοςΑνεστη #Resurrection #Life #LifeOverDeath #Jesus #JesusChrist #Saints #Panagia #Orthodoxy #OrthodoxEaster #Brightweek #BrightMonday #Renewal #RenewalMonday #Love #Forgiveness #Repentance

Bright Week (Greek: Diakainisimos Ebdomas or "Renewal Week") is the seven-day period beginning on Easter Sunday and ending the following Saturday. In the Greek Orthodox tradition, it is considered one continuous day of celebration, representing the eternal joy of the Resurrection. Key Facts and Traditions 1. Continuous Celebration: The entire week is treated as one single day of Pascha (Easter). Because of this, the normal rules for fasting are completely suspended—even on Wednesday and Friday, which are typically fasting days in the Orthodox Church. 2. Open Royal Doors: During every service this week, the "Royal Doors" (the central gates of the iconostasis) and the side doors to the altar remain wide open. This symbolizes the stone being rolled away from Christ’s tomb and the gates of Heaven being opened to all humanity. 3. The Paschal Greeting: For the duration of Bright Week (and the 40 days following), Greeks greet each other with "Christos Anesti!" (Christ is Risen!) to which the response is "Alithos Anesti!" (Truly He is Risen!). 4. No Kneeling: Since the week is a celebration of the Resurrection, kneeling is traditionally forbidden during church services as a sign of joy and victory over death; the faithful remain standing. 5. Special Funeral Rites: If a funeral occurs during Bright Week, it is remarkably different. It consists almost entirely of joyful Easter hymns rather than mournful ones, reflecting the belief that those who pass away during this time "rise with Christ." 6. "Bright" Days: Each day of the week is prefixed with the word "Bright" (e.g., Bright Monday, Bright Tuesday). In many Greek villages, these days involve local festivals, dancing, and "Panigyria" (outdoor celebrations). 7. The End of the Week: Bright Week concludes on the following Sunday, known as Thomas Sunday (or Antipascha), which commemorates the Apostle Thomas touching the wounds of Christ. Symbolism of Red Eggs While the red eggs are cracked on Easter Sunday, they continue to be eaten and displayed throughout Bright Week. The hard shell represents the sealed Tomb of Christ, and the act of cracking it represents His emergence and the "breaking" of the bonds

CHRIST IS RISEN! 🌟 We are in the midst of 🌟 Bright Week 🌟, the week after Great and Holy Pascha. This week, the church services maintain all the paschal joy of this past weekend. We sing Christ is Risen many many times 🎵, the royal doors of the iconastas remain open, and light fills the sanctuary. It’s also a week of working through all our 🧀 🍷feasting foods🍳🍔 And sooo many people I talk to are stressed about overeating, and allowing it to overshadow the joy of this week. We don’t eat with the intention of feeling uncomfortably stuffed or sick, but sometimes it happens anyway. So what should we do if we overeat? NOTHING! It’s okay, it doesn’t mean you feasted “wrong.” You don’t have to “make up” for it at the next meal, or burn it off, or be ashamed. The feeling of discomfort will pass. Give thanks to God for your food. Share in the joy with others present. Sing and proclaim the truth of Christ’s Resurrection! You can always try again at the next meal. So tell me, what are some of your favorite feasting foods? ⬇️ - - - #christisrisen #pascha #easter #brightweek #orthodoxy #orthodoxchristianity #orthodoxeaster
