He successfully completed his first five lifts but failed on his final attempt Rather than show disappointment, Katoatau reacted with an unexpected celebration: he kissed the barbell, smiled broadly, and performed a brief dance on the platform as the crowd cheered This lively response – including his trademark dance moves – made him a fan favourite during the competition. Katoatau’s celebratory dance was not just for fun, but was deliberately intended to highlight a serious issue. He has explained that he uses these post-lift dances to draw attention to climate change and rising sea levels threatening his home country of Kiribati. Kiribati is a low-lying Pacific island nation already suffering “extreme coastal erosion” and flooding,and Katoatau has been vocal about its vulnerability. For example, he wrote an open letter describing the “homes lost to rising sea levels” in Kiribati and said he wants people around the world to know about Kiribati’s plight.
