Beethoven wrote Symphony No. 9 when he was completely deaf. Last night, the BSO played it like the world depended on it. And maybe it did. Look up at the ceiling of Symphony Hall, Boston — one composer’s name is engraved there. Just one. Beethoven’s. We understood why. Last night it almost felt like an appeal to the Divine. Bass-baritone Morris Robinson was nothing short of transcendent. The orchestra: on fire. The standing ovation: inevitable. This was musicianship at its most committed: strings digging in with urgency, winds phrasing with eloquence, brass blazing without losing balance. Every section felt locked into a shared purpose, listening acutely, shaping each phrase as if it mattered—because it did. Conductor Dima Slobodeniouk harnessed that resolve into a performance of sweep and conviction, with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus—expertly prepared by Jean-Sébastien Vallée—delivering thrilling impact. The soloists—Andrea Carroll, Zoie Reams, Andrew Haji, and a magnificent Robinson each gave it their all. What stood out wasn’t just precision, but belief. In a season that demanded resilience, the orchestra responded with unity and conviction, turning Beethoven’s score into something lived rather than performed. They are true masters of their craft and unbelievable professionals. The result was electrifying: not just a great rendition, but a reminder of the rare power an orchestra holds when it plays with absolute trust in one another—and in the music. A tumultuous season for the BSO — closed the only way Beethoven would have approved. With overwhelming, soul-restoring joy. 🎶 @bostonsymphony @bostonsymphonymusicians @natesviolin @dima_slobodeniouk @andrisnelsons @blaise.dejardin @bsoviola1 @alexvelinzon @fificowmoo @robert.sheena @mdrbass @acsoprano @thefirstseventyfive @andrewhaji @cathybasrak @jsvallee @timgenis @tanglewoodmusicfestival #beethoven #odetojoy #bostonsymphonyorchestra #bso

🎶🎻 Antonín Dvořák – Danza Eslava nº 2 en Mi menor, Op. 72 (Dumka) Yo-Yo Ma (violonchelo) & Itzhak Perlman (violín) | Seiji Ozawa & BSO – Smetana Hall, Praga, 1993 ✨ • Uno pregunta.

Last month, Boston Symphony Orchestra leadership announced it planned to part ways with Music Director Andris Nelsons. It left the BSO with no realistic timeframe to secure a new artistic leader before Nelsons’ departure next year. Typically, Music Director terms end with coordinated messaging between parties. Not so here. Most alarmingly, the @bsomusicians (follow them!) found out at the same time the public did. No input, no warning, no explanation. Does this style of leadership serve the best interests of an orchestra? Would you want to work for an organization that treats its artists like this? #orchestra #classicalmusic #musician #orchestramusician #classicalmusician
