Buddy Ebsen. Born this day, (April 2, 1908 – July 6, 2003) At the remarkable age of 85, Buddy made a comeback in 1993 to reprise his role as Jed Clampett in the film “The Legend of the Beverly Hillbillies.” The film featured a reunion of the original cast members from the closing theme of the show, including vocalist Jerry Scoggins, Earl Scruggs, and Roy Clark, who filled in for the late Lester Flatt. This was Buddy’s final appearance as Jed Clampett. Originally a dancer, Buddy’s film career began in 1936 with the Broadway musical “Melody of the Heart.” He also appeared alongside Shirley Temple in the 1936 film “Captain January.” Buddy was cast as the Tin Man in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.” However, before filming commenced, he suffered a severe allergic reaction due to inhaling aluminum powder used in his makeup. “Buddy” Ebsen was an American actor and dancer, whose career spanned seven decades He had been all set to make his big break as the Tin-Man in the Wizard of Oz… But when filming started he quickly began experiencing shortness of breath and debilitating muscle cramps. Doctors determined that the aluminum dust used in the Tin Man makeup, which was applied multiple times a day, was coating his lungs and keeping his blood from being oxygenated… He was forced to drop out of the film even though he had recorded all of his songs and was replaced by Jack Haley. The studio kept Ebsen’s condition a secret from his replacement and quietly changed to a paste instead of dust. This gave Haley a severe eye infection but didn’t force him out of the film. Ebsen was left with lifelong breathing problems but outlived almost everyone involved in the film, dying aged 95. He returned to the screen in the 1950s taking dozens of supporting roles and eventually going on to star in two major television shows: The Beverly Hillbillies and Barnaby Jones.
