Buddy Hackett was one of the proverbial legends of old time comedians. He started as a Catskills tummler (same as Danny Kaye!) and evolved into a guy who could nearly everything in comedy- from radio and television and Disney movies to working blue late night at an after hours club. He was also a regular Tonight Show guest, telling jokes that often trod the line of whether or not it could be shown on television. This one is safely on the line of being shown, of course, and demonstrates a little bit of comedy chops. He does something physical without explaining what it is exactly, but we see it as a quirk of the character. Later it turns out that that physical quirk is the crux of the joke. He sets it up as a pattern, and then breaks the pattern to make us laugh by changing our expectations. How could you do this in your material?
